Girls' Basketball: Kahuku hangs on to No. 1 ranking, but a team in green joins the party
Posted at 11:38 PM
Kahuku suffered a stunning loss to Konawaena Saturday, but remains lodged at No. 1 in the latest HondaReport.com Girls’ Basketball Top Ten. But that’s not all. There’s also another team now ranked No. 1 thanks to the predictably wishy-washy voting of coaches and media Sunday. And, that team does not originate from O’ahu…

HONOLULU—Eenie, meenie, mynie, mo…
Konawaena’s stunning 55-41 win over top-ranked Kahuku yesterday sent voters into a tizzy as the HondaReport.com Girls’ Basketball Top Ten ballots arrived in e-mailboxes across the state.
Punahou, last week’s No. 2 team, had as much chance as third-ranked Konawaena and even Kahuku to ascend to the top spot in this week’s new poll.
Instead, media and coaches proved to be as wishy-washy as the teams they’ve elected. Kahuku and Konawaena amassed 110 points each from voters to share the No. 1 ranking in the Top Ten released late Sunday evening.

Kahuku (11-1) gathered four first-place votes, while Konawaena (10-2) accumulated six. Punahou (8-2), with two first-place votes, finished with 104 points to drop into the No. 3 spot.
It was a matter of what-have-you-done-lately for voters, who also pushed Roosevelt out of the Top Ten for no apparent reason.
Kamehameha-O’ahu edged past Kalaheo for the No. 4 spot after posting wins over Saint Francis and Mid-Pacific to open Interscholastic League of Honolulu play.
Maryknoll, Lahainaluna and McKinley stayed put in the No. 6, 7 and 8 spots. Iolani returned to the poll at No. 9 following a win over Mid-Pacific.
Kamehameha-East Hawai’i made its debut in the Top Ten, right on the 10 spot. The Warriors, comprised solely of sophomores and freshmen, completed preseason 6-4, including a win over Iolani. They also pushed Kahuku and Kalaheo hard before falling in this weekend’s Lady Cardinal Classic.
Mid-Pacific, last week’s No. 10 team, started ILH play 0-2 and slipped out of the Top Ten.
