HONOLULU—Analee Viena-Lota is no secret in the rugged Interscholastic League of Honolulu.

After Wednesday night, however, she is going to be a very well-known name statewide. The freshman pumped in 19 points off the bench to lead Kamehameha-O’ahu over McKinley in the opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines Girls’ Basketball State Championships at Stan Sheriff Center.

In other games, Iolani outlasted Kaiser 50-49, Kalaheo rolled over Kaua’i 62-38, and Lahainaluna trumped Honoka’a 47-38.

The four winning teams advanced to Thursday’s quarterfinal round. No. 2 seed Kahuku plays Lahainaluna at 2:45 p.m. The fourth seed, Baldwin, plays Iolani at 4:30 p.m. Top-seeded Konawaena battles Kamehameha-O’ahu at 6:15 p.m. Kalaheo takes on No. 3 seed Punahou at 8 p.m.

In consolation matchups, McKinley plays Kaiser at 11:15 a.m., followed by Honoka’a and Kaua’i at 1 p.m.

Kamehameha-O’ahu 52, McKinley 42—Viena-Lota, a 5-foot-8 forward, stepped up with her biggest output of the season. With the Warriors dominating the boards and the Lady Tigers succumbing to turnovers, Viena-Lota’s marksmanship proved to be a key factor.

Kamehameha-O’ahu, ranked No. 5 in the HondaReport.com Top Ten, improved to 19-6 overall (10-4 ILH). McKinley, ranked No. 6, is 15-10 (10-4 OIA).

Viena-Lota scored nine of her 19 points in the fourth quarter, helping Kamehameha-O’ahu break a 35-all stalemate entering the final quarter. She sank consecutive baskets to open the fourth, including a fastbreak layup off a feed from Tatriana Lorenzo.

Lorenzo, who finished with 13 points, sank a tough baseline jumper, and Viena-Lota swished a 16-footer from the left wing as the Warriors opened a 47-37 lead with 4:22 left to play.

The Lady Tigers, who led for almost the entire first half, pulled within seven on a trey by Chantal Yadao. However, Kamehameha’s defense suffocated the McKinley offense, and the Lady Tigers scored only two points in the final three minutes.

Viena-Lota added a drive for a three-point play as the Warriors opened their biggest lead, 52-40, with 2:03 to go.

The lanky sharpshooter made 8-of-14 tries from the field, as well as all three of her free-throw attempts. Lorenzo made 6-of-10 from the field, adding seven rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots.

Nihipali and Lisa Nakamura led the Warriors under the glass. Nihipali, a 5-9 senior, finished with 13 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Six of her caroms came on the offensive end. She also dished out four assists.

Nakamura hustled for 12 boards. Kamehameha outrebounded McKinley, 49-27. Eleven of McKinley’s 15 turnovers came in the second half.

Bre Carson and Yadao led the Lady Tigers with 15 points each. Carson was 4-of-8 from the field and 6-of-7 from the line. She also had four of McKinley’s 12 steals. Yadao shot 5-of-12 from the floor, including 5-of-9 from 3-point range. She also hauled in six rebounds and had three steals.

Kamehameha-O’ahu shot 39 percent from the field (22 of 57) and finished with 18 turnovers. Only six of the turnovers came after halftime. The Warriors limited McKinley to 30-percent shooting from the field (14 of 47), including just 24 percent in the second half.

McKinley shot 30 percent from 3-point range (6-of-20), as well.

The Lady Tigers zoomed to an 8-3 lead, but the Warriors whittled away. After Carson sank a pull-up jumper from the corner, she already had 10 points, and McKinley led, 21-14, with 5:16 left in the first half.

McKinley used a triangle-and-two defense to keep Warrior guards Lorenzo and India Soo hounded. That opened the gaps on the perimeter for Viena-Lota.
