Ikaika Tan was a tremendous person, and the entire Kapolei High School community is deeply saddened by his loss. He was a a lot of things to a lot of people and he was a great son, father, brother, student-athlete, and friend to us all. Like all of my players, I came to love Ikaika like a son. I was especially close to him because I coached him in football as well as wrestling. I knew him as a precocious 7th grader, when he would tell me that he was going to "play for me" when he got to high school. And play for me he did. He is the only 3 year, 2 way starter I have ever coched in my 12 seasons as a head coach. He was fast(4.49 forty yard dash & 10.9 100 meters)strong(285 Bench Press & 365 Squat)tough(he never missed a PLAY, let alone a game in his 3 varsity years because of injury) and extremely athletic (he played RB,SB,WR,KR,PR,OLB,CB,SS,and FS).If I had kept him in one position instead of moving him all around because we needed him everywhere, he would have excelled even more. As it was he was a 1st team OIA West All Star and a HB All State pick in the Honolulu Advertiser. The consumate team player, he responded with "yes coach!" whenever he was addressed and/or asked to do something. Anything for the team. No questions asked. He was planning to walk on at the University of Hawaii as a PR and SB, where he hoped to fashion a career similar to his favorite player, the electrifying Chad Owens. Now we are all left to wonder what might have been as this great ray of light that shone on us all has been snuffed out. To his parents and family and friends, words cannot express what he has meant to everyone in the Kapolei Ohana. May God Bless You in Heaven my boy! Love, Coach Hernandez

Paul was an amazing person on the field and by heart. It's such a tragic thing that happened, but the lord had bigger and better things waiting for him. He is up there winning the super bowl for us KHS. We all know that he's sitting on a cloud waiting the day to reunite with Nikki and watching over his pride and joy. Until we meet again in that special place up in heaven. One love always...the legacy lives on(Riley Kaikamahiliilani Tan) take care and RIP.

ikaika tan. whether he was the guy in front of you, or the guy you wish was yours, or even if he was the best player, ikaika was always ikaika. nothing matter more to him than family. when i attended his funeral last night there was so many people. it started at 6 and ended after 9, i left before 9 and there was still a long line down the street waiting to see him. he was truly someone that we were all proud of. we lost a HURRICANE family member but in spirit we have not. he literally lived his life to the fullest, there was never a day where i remember him not enjoying every moment whether it was rain or shine. he is a true star thar has left earth but continues to shine in heaven. kaika we love you lots and when we are to leave this earth we'll see u up there with the big u know who lol. much luv kaika rest in peace!

Hey Uncle Paul, AUnty Eileen, chae, nikki & sweet dearest Riley... Hey kaikz up above!!! we miss u. Kaikz dis 4 u and ohana...(Poem 4 U) Why did it happen that late night? The car wreck, the shattered windows and lastly that bright light. When you woke up, you felt ok, but if they'd only known, you would still be here today. I know it's not just me you left, and the pain I feel I just can't confess. Your family, your loved ones, they hurt too; they know what its like to bury you. And the one possession that I kept was the ring you gave me before you left. So I keep this ring very close to my heart, because it's the only way I know we'll never be apart.

Editor's note: If you would like to add your thoughts, please write them on the Ikaika Tan thread in the Forums (Football). I will add your thoughts to this compilation. Mahalo.
