H-1 logjam

Sirens and sirens and sirens and ... why the heck are they still at top volume right next to my building? Turns out both directions of the H-1 were completely frozen. Not a good sign.

MO'ILI'ILI — The H-1 Freeway shut down near a major artery of East Honolulu for hours due to an overturned dump truck.

The vehicle damaged the H-1 median east of the Old Waialae Road overpass (and Kapiolani Blvd. off-ramp). West-bound commuters were rolling again after 30 minutes or so, but east-bound drivers were stuck. The logjam went back miles.

(above) H-1 freeway, east of the Old Waialae Road overpass. No flow in either direction because of an overturned dump truck that damaged the median.

Note the overturned truck in the bottom left corner. Traffic heading west-bound was resumed after about 30 minutes.

After an hour of waiting, east-bound cars begin to turn around and head for the on-ramp.

Police officers direct cars through the on-ramp to get off the freeway. Unusual, but good strategy by Honolulu's Finest. Cars on the west side of the off-ramp, however, were stuck for hours.
