HALAWA — Hotter than July, that's what today is.

The state cross country championships this morning were glorious. And hot. Here at Aloha Stadium, there's a lot of humidity, but thankfully, the field is now in shadows as Waipahu and Kaimuki captains stand at mid-field for the coin flip.

Here's a pupule look at this weekend's matchups.

Friday's games
BIIF
Keaau (7-4) at No. 8 Kealakehe (11-0, 9-0) —
Keaau is an interesting team with a prominent running back, Bronson Kaneao. Would the Waveriders dare overlook the Cougars? Possibly. Even at the pro and college levels, teams can become complacent. Even so, it's a tough task to travel 120 miles and beat a goliath in the BIIF. Gabe Tuata runs for 150 yards and three touchdowns ... Kealakehe 41, Keaau 13.

Konawaena (7-4, 6-2) at Kamehameha-Hawaii (8-2, 7-2) — They played tough in a mid-season battle at Kealakekua. Will these teams have new wrinkles in store tonight? Warriors escape Wildcats, 23-21.

OIA
No. 2 Kahuku (8-2) vs. No. 3 Waianae (7-3), Aloha Stadium —
Seariders have the tools to build their first OIA championship since 1997, but my gut feeling says Kahuku wins for a fourth year in a row. Red Raiders 21, Seariders 18.

Kaimuki (6-3-1) vs. Waipahu (6-2-2), Aloha Stadium — Low-scoring first half, explosive second half as lack of depth takes a toll ... on the Bulldogs. Marauders 29, Bulldogs 21.

Saturday's game
ILH
Damien (3-6-1, 2-4-1) vs. Iolani (4-5-1, 2-4-1), Kaiser Stadium —
High-scoring first game (34-all), low-scoring second (Damien won 14-10) ... shootout is due with a state berth on the line. Raiders 51, Monarchs 44.

No. 9 Mililani (7-3) at No. 7 Leilehua (7-3) — Even without a state berth at stake, this game would be extra intense. Mighty Mules 26, Trojans 24.
