To love ... or not

Valentine's Day means a lot for most people. For single insomniacs, it's a little bit different.

On this eve of Valentine's Day, here is an offering some things worthy of love, and some not so.

I love: Brotherhood, the Showtime series. I was a non-believer for several weeks before I finally gave the program a chance. I was hooked from the start. The weaving of New England politics and back-street organized crime is compelling, but the acting and writing are unsurpassed. I don't know when this series will return for Season 2, but I can barely wait.

I love, not: According to Jim. I tuned in a year or so ago. After 2 minutes of lame, generic, bombastic dialogue, I was a hater. It's hard to turn me off that badly, but this show and its moronic writing did just that.

I love: The online streaming of ABC hit shows. Free. Nice. Still not interested in following Grey's Anatomy anymore. What about Brian lost me in episode 2 when Brian turned out to be a wishy-washy putz. But Brothers and Sisters and Desperate Housewives are relatively interesting, enough to watch if I'm home, not enough for me to set the DVR. Still not compelled enough to watch Ugly Betty, The Knights of Prosperity and Men in Trees online just yet ... but nothing takes the cake like Lost.

I love, not: Losing sacred landmarks of my youth. The facade of Varsity Theater could come down once UH student housing is built on the property next to Church of the Crossroads. Stadium Bowl-O-Drome's days are numbered. The building is tattered and worn, just a shadow of what once was a commanding stretch of structures along King and Isenberg Streets. I hope these landmarks stay alive, but it's in the hands of corporations.

I love: Drivers who generously give you the right of way in tight traffic.

I love, not: Drivers who hold up traffic, trying to force their way into the right of way. Then they don't even acknowledge the other drivers who let them in. Bad, bad, bad.

I love: Most retro jerseys, including those worn by the Dallas Mavericks and Washington Wizards.

I love, not: The color black in anything worn by the Boston Celtics. Talk about sacrilege.

I love: Strawberry shave ice (with ice cream and azuki beans) from Waiola Shave Ice. Price ain't bad either (3 bucks).

I love, not: Spending 20 bucks to see a movie. Can't help it. I'm addicted to butter popcorn and furikake mochi crunch when I see a film.

I love: The post-season. I also love preseason and the regular season. The post-season, though, is never dull, whether it's softball, soccer, basketball, wrestling ... seeing high school athletes excel under pressure never gets old.

I love, not: Paying $2.77 for a gallon of unleaded regular gas.

There is more to love than to hate. More on that later ...
