The news was good, and it continues to be for the Baldwin Bears.

There are so many facets to the gem that is Baldwin Bears softball, words can't just capture the luster.

It would take a book, or a lengthy magazine essay to really capture the soul of what the Bears' endurance and excellence under the father-and-son leadership of Rudy and Ryan Souza.

I knew this when I spoke with them and a few of their outstanding players at the state tournament. I knew this when I interviewed them a few days ago for a feature story in the Star-Bulletin. In fact, I have more notes about this amazing program — and the fingerprints that are all over it — that I could probably write many, many chapters for a book about Baldwin's sterling state-championship season.

I'm under guidelines, as is any journalist, to write within sensible limitations. A newspaper has limited space, and I've often been afforded the benefit of the doubt when it comes to feature stories like this. As much as I tried, it was still painstaking to leave out so many details, so much vivid color.

I don't know what I'll do with the wealth of information that the Bears shared with me. I only scratched the surface with the story. Hopefully, the spirit of what they stand for, the greatness of their sum total as a team, is always understood. What they did this season was just one facet on a gem that caught the sun's rays. I'd love to write about all the other facets on the other side, the ones that led to this shining season.
