Pupule's Top 10 ballot, Feb. 18
Posted at 12:55 PM
Turbulence above, tremors below, but Punahou and Iolani enter the state tourney locked at 1 and 2 on my ballot.

[new: Sun AM] One word: WOW. Baldwin's domination of the MIL has ended for the time being. (Some of the Bear's best players are underclassmen.) Kamehameha-Maui captured the MIL title last night with an overtime win over the Bears. Does this mean we can expect two high-quality teams from the MIL at the state tourney? Not so sure about that. when they made that nice run two years ago, players like Trenson Himalaya stepped up (after recovering from injuries) in the post-season. There won't be any seniors rising up to prominence this time for the young Bears. What you see is what you get, and with KS-Maui, I haven't even seen any of their players in action. Ever.
[new: Sat PM] Waiting on the MIL championship game (Baldwin vs. Kamehameha-Maui), but the rest of the state-tournament picture is almost set. Saint Louis went to the Big Island and rolled over Konawaena by 21. Stunning. Last night, Kaimuki overpowered Kalaheo for the OIA title. Another stunner. This ballot will be finalized with the MIL result. A lot of D-II teams are moving up my list, especially after Aiea got past McKinley for the OIA White title last night.
[new: Thur AM] Big Wednesday, indeed. Big: McKinley ousted top-seeded Kaiser, a team it had beaten during the regular-season, 57-56 and will play Aiea for the OIA White title on Friday. ... Kailua went to Mililani and eliminated the Trojans, 49-48. Just when it looked like the OIA West was closing the gap on the East, the West goes 0-for-4 on the biggest playoff day in the league so far. In addition to Kailua's win, Moanalua routed Leilehua (setting up a Kailua-Moanalua matchup for the fifth and final OIA state berth), Kaimuki pulled away from Radford (semifinal) and Kalaheo dusted off Campbell (semifinal). ... You could certainly argue that it is similar in the OIA White, since Aiea needed a forfeit by Thompson to reach the semis, and Na Alii made the most of their second chance to beat Farrington. ... No surprises in the ILH tourney, where Kamehameha and Saint Louis have advanced to the third-place final. Quite a night for all.
[new: Wed AM] No changes yet. The only team in my Top 25 to play was Maryknoll, though the tremors caused by Kauai (which won the KIF on Monday), Molokai and Lanai (MIL's D-II leaders for the regular season) are intriguing. No, the real quake hits tonight with semifinals in the ILH (third-place tourney), OIA Red and White, PLUS the battle for fifth place (state berth) in the OIA Red. In other words, there will be eight games between 16 quality teams tonight.
[new: Mon AM] Just for fun, I'm starting this week's ballot earlier than ever. I started last week's ballot late, and there are just 200-something views, far off the 600-plus from the week before. So here goes the little experiment. I wish you guys would just post your own ballots, even if you aren't a voter in the Star-Bulletin Top 10.
[generic] I'll be updating my ballot for the week each day for everyone's viewing pleasure (and/or displeasure). Ballots for the Star-Bulletin Top 10 are due Sunday, 3 p.m.
1. Punahou (22-3, 11-1 ILH)
The skinny: Buffanblu capture the ILH title with the win at Iolani. Miah Ostrowski (26 points) and Spencer McLachlin (15 rebounds) powered Punahou. Top seed at the state tourney? Who else could be?

10. Konawaena (23-7, 12-4 BIIF)
The skinny: Lopsided loss to visiting Saint Louis is perplexing, but not shocking. Wildcats didn't match up size-wise, and the free-throw troubles got worse (12-for-29). I expected much more, but this is still a team that knocked off BIIF regular-season winner Honokaa in the playoffs. I would move Konawaena down, but I can't find a lower team that has beaten Saint Louis or a team at that elite level. So Konawaena stays.

ON THE CUSP
11. Honokaa (22-3, 14-2 BIIF)
The skinny: The format of the BIIF gives regular-season champ Honokaa an automatic state berth. The new format, though, means the loss to Konawaena in the semifinals gives Honokaa the BIIF's second seed. In years past, the regular-season champ used to play the playoff winner for the "overall" championship.

14. Keaau (20-7, 13-3 BIIF)
The skinny: Cougars' season comes to an end with a heartbreaking loss to Kamehameha-Hawaii. The Cougars are one of the top teams in the state, but end up as the odd team out since the BIIF has just three state berths. Just a few days earlier, the Cougars lost at Honokaa by three points, which was the difference between an automatic state berth and fighting for survival.
