It's rare that I permit pride to affect personal performance, but ...

I confess. I don't read the newspapers a lot.

Oh, I'll grab our Star-Bulletin if I'm near a stand or leaving Foodland. But I don't subscribe. By the time the SB arrives at front doors after 3 p.m., I've been long gone for the rest of the afternoon and evening.

Advertiser? Frankly, I don't read it like I should as a competitor. It's a good newspaper and I respect my counterparts there very much. But I read the SB online early in the day, and that fills my void.

When the state wrestling championships hit prime time yesterday at Blasidell Arena, I couldn't help but get emotionally involved in many of the championship matches. I also couldn't help noticing that there were three of us from the SB at one table — Billy Hull, Kyle Galdeira and myself — and three from the 'Tizer next to us.

I wondered how we would do against our foes ... on the mat.

• Billy Hull, 6-foot-1 and 215 pounds, just out of college, still in decent shape. He could take on Kalani Takase, a former judooka standout who is still in college. I don't know if Billy could take down my old friend (Kalani weighs somewhere around 230), but Billy is shifty and sneaky enough to hold his own.

• Kyle Galdeira, at 5-9, 235 pounds, is a former HPU and Kamehameha baseball player. Also a paddler. He has the girth and lower-body strength to take on Wes Nakama, who is probably in the 180-190 range. Wes is a former basketball player, but he's old like me, pushing 40. Edge to KG.

• That would leave me, a middle-aged former hoops addict, against the 'Tizer's Kyle Sakamoto. Kyle's a smart guy, but at 5-7 (or so) and about 140 pounds, I'd have an edge if we locked up. I may be 5-11 and 205 pounds of flab, but I know how to use it. Edge to Pupule, Victory to the Star-Bulletin sports dorks.

I'll be the guy wearing the Nacho Libre mask. Just don't ask us to wear tights. Pleeeeeease.
