Tigers scorch the nets from long distance

Bob Morikuni is one of the finest basketball minds in Hawaii high school basketball, which is why he's not quite satisfied with his McKinley Tigers, not even after they drilled 10 3-pointers in a win.

They rained 3-point bombs from the onset. It's the kind of basketball fastbreaks, quick ball movement and precise marksmanship that just about any basketball fan likes.

McKinley went to Castle's dimly-lit gym and unleashed a storm of treys, including five by Kaitlyn Ikehara and three by Chelsie Sato in a 58-45 win over the previously hot Knights.

And yet, McKinley coach Bob Morikuni nailed it right on the head when he cautioned that his team needs balance and better shot selection soon, as in playoff time. The Tigers shot 10-for-20 from the 3-point arc, including 7-for-10 in the first half. They've been so hot in the past two weeks from long distance that Morikuni realizes all streaks cool off sooner or later even when your team is 9-1 in league play.

He's not willing to live and die by the proverbial 3-point sword. For now, though, all Tiger fans should be smiling. It's nice to be en fuego and have every opponent backpedaling in fear.
