Crusaders line up at No. 2

Not that the Saint Louis Crusaders prefer to be No. 2, as they were last year.

Star-Bulletin: Crusaders still command respect

There's a lot to be said for an 11-0 season. Unfortunately, for Saint Louis, there was a 12th game in the 2006 high school football season. With Micah Mamiya sidelined, the Crusaders came up just a bit short in a 7-6 state final loss to Kahuku.

I'd like to think that with a relatively experienced offensive line — four of five starters are back — plus experienced receivers and running backs, Mamiya could guide the Saints to some record-setting numbers this fall.

Easier said than done, though. Defenses are more accustomed to the flex option offense, so scoring points may not be so easy in the rugged ILH. I could easily be wrong, of course.

The real mystery will come on defense and special teams. How will they deal with the graduation of all-state defensive ends Scott Smith and Solomona Aigamaua? What about Jacob Barit's graduation?

Factor in Barit's great performance last season not only at middle linebacker, but as a punter, plus the departure of consistent placekicker Kenton Chun, and the question marks abound.

All the more for an intriguing season ahead. Oh, and Saint Louis meets No. 1 Kahuku tomorrow night.
