Thoughts from the Carleton
Posted at 12:27 AM
Good thing I got in the car and headed out to Kahuku when I did. Traffic is no fun whether it's in town or on the North Shore.
The Kalaheo-Kahuku game is still an hour or so away, but I'm sitting here at Carleton Weimer Field and enjoying life. Eli Kapu and Kingsley Ah You are rapping (not literally), the JV game is in the second half, and according to Yahoo Sports, Hawaii has eked out a 45-44 overtime win at Louisiana Tech.
I'm trying to figure out why LaTech went for 2 on the PAT in overtime. Maybe their coach figured his team was exhausted. Maybe he wanted to catch UH's defense off-guard. But either way, I think it's a mistake. Your guys rack up 44 points on the No. 20 team in the nation, and you take away their chance to win in a slugout. It all boils down to a 2-point conversion, that on average, has a 30 percent success rate nationwide.
Oh well. Tough for the Bulldogs. Awesome for UH.
Trojans love Sunshine. When Colin Lund's extra-point kick was snuffed by Leilehua yesterday, it was disappointing. Any placekicker would be miffed. You can't get the job done unless all nine of your blockers do their assignments.
He didn't complain. He drilled his next PAT try, and then went on to nail a 27-yard field goal in the final minute as the Trojans edged rival Leilehua 16-14.
Star-Bulletin: Lund kicks 1 in for coach
The entire coaching staff, maybe the players, too, had T-shirts on under their game gear with a picture of Kaimi Tong. The assistant coach died recently and the entire team keeps his memory dear and close to their hearts. Literally.
