Not bad, not good so far.
Week 1: 13-1-1
Week 2 : 13-3-2
Week 3: 8-2-1
Week 4: 9-2 last week, another mediocre performance by Pupule.
Updated record: 43-8-4 (.818).
Friday's games
(6:20 p.m. Almost forgot the ILH doubleheader!)
• ILH
Damien (2-1-1, 1-0) vs. Iolani (1-2, 0-0) — Brute strength and blocking skills in the trenches plus Kama Bailey ... versus pure finesse and aerial circus football by Iolani. Should be close. Pupule says: Raiders 31, Monarchs 29.
Punahou (2-0, 0-0) vs. Kamehameha (1-0-1, 0-0) — Warriors are talented and learning to master new coach David Stant's wide-open offense. Punahou has played well so far against solid competition. Pupule says: Buffanblu 28, Warriors 24.
• OIA Red
Castle (2-2, 2-0) vs. No. 10 Kalaheo (3-1, 1-1), Kailua field — Blake Rapozo was hot, hot, hot last week (23-for-27, 215 yards) against Moanalua. Kalaheo is a team of talent, swagger and skill ... but after four games, we'll see how much gas is in the tank, especially after a hard-fought loss at Kahuku. Maybe I'm a bit too worried, but seeing Cody vonAppen take so many hits to the body and the head last week gives me reason. Pupule says: Mustangs pull out a thriller, 34-31.
Farrington (1-1-1, 1-0) at Moanalua (1-2-1, 0-2) — Na Menehune have unity and heart, but the Govs are well-rested after last week's bye. One of the OIA's top defenses is up against Moanalua's bulldozing quarterback, Jordan Monico. Pupule says: Governors 15, Na Menehune 10.
Radford (0-3, 0-1) at Aiea (2-2, 1-1), Friday — The Rams will show improvement, but Na Alii are deep, talented and skilled at QB, WR and RB. Pupule says: Na Alii in a shootout, 39-33.
• OIA White
Anuenue (2-1, 2-1) at Kaiser (0-3, 0-2) — Cougars are in rebuilding mode against a senior-heavy Na Koa squad. Kamaki Sherman not only is an All-State candidate, but accounted for himself quite well on TV the other night. Pupule says: Anuenue cages the Cougars, 23-7.
Waipahu (2-1, 2-0) vs. Kaimuki (3-1, 3-0), Roosevelt field — This could be the real game of the night. This will be an interesting battle of power running (Kaimuki) versus finesse option running (Waipahu). Tough call here, but until someone upends the defending White champs ... Pupule says: Marauders 22, Bulldogs 15.
• KIF
Kauai (3-0, 1-0) vs. Waimea (3-0, 0-0), Hanapepe Stadium — OK, maybe this will be the game of the night. Andrew Renaud has had Waimea's number for the past few years, but the Menehunes are resurgent this season, and this game is on their home turf. Pupule says: Red Raiders escape from Menehunes, 19-14.
• MIL
Kamehameha-Maui (0-1, 0-0) vs. Lahainaluna (2-0, 0-0), War Memorial Stadium — Lunas will be gracious hosts until opening kickoff. After that, their hunger will surface. Pupule says: Lunas 44, Warriors 14.
• BIIF
Hilo (2-1, 2-0) at Honokaa (0-3, 0-2) — Dragons are proud and feisty after three losses. This is a prime example of how tough it is to win on the road in the BIIF, especially on a school day. Pupule says: Dragons upset the Viks, 23-21.
Waiakea (1-3, 1-1) at Keaau (1-1, 0-1) — Cougars showed a ton of heart in a near-upset last week at Kealakehe. Is there anything left emotionally after that long ordeal (230-mile round trip)? Maybe the Cougars get extra juice from a jacked-up home crowd tonight. Pupule says: Keaau 29, Waiakea 24.
Saturday's games
• OIA Red
No. 3 Kahuku (1-2, 1-0) at Kailua (1-3, 1-1) — The Surfriders match up well thanks to a senior-heavy linebacking corps. Red Raiders, though, have a way of wearing defenses down. That's what 300-pound linemen can do. Pupule says: Kahuku 37, Kailua 23.
No. 5 Mililani (3-1, 1-1) at No. 8 Kapolei (3-0, 1-0) — Another great matchup in the Red West. This one should be on TV. No ... wait ... it is on TV. Kapolei's size and speed on defense will be well-tested by a talented, balanced Mililani offense. Pupule says: Trojans come through on special teams for a 19-17 win.
• OIA White
Roosevelt (2-1, 2-1) at Nanakuli (1-2, 1-1) — Golden Hawks are starting to play better, but the Rough Riders nearly beat Waipahu on the road last week. Pupule says: Roosevelt 22, Nanakuli 19.
Waialua (1-3, 0-3) vs. Kalani (0-3, 0-3), Kaiser field — Falcons are improving, but the Bulldogs have confidence to go with speed at quarterback in Donovan Matas. Pupule says: Bulldogs 17, Falcons 7.
• MIL
Maui (0-2, 0-0) vs. Baldwin (1-1, 0-0), War Memorial Stadium — Big rivalry game, but the Sabers are rebuilding and learning a new offense. Baldwin is a machine, and if Chase Nakamura returns at WR tonight, Jordan Helle could light up the scoreboard. Pupule says: Bears 41, Sabers 20.
• BIIF
Ka‘u (0-1, 0-1) at Hawaii Prep (2-1, 2-0) — Ka Makani are back to their winning ways, might even upset Kealakehe this year. Pupule says: HPA 40, Trojans 5.
Kealakehe (3-0, 2-0) at Konawaena (1-3, 1-1) — This is not a grudge game. True, Kealakehe assistant (special teams) coach Todd Brown was fired from his head coaching job by Konawaena last year. Yes, he was fired despite going 33-22. Former Konawaena QB Kawai Kanuha followed Brown to Kealakehe, just another fact. No grudge. Riiiiight. Pupule says: Waveriders open strong and tame the Wildcats, 35-14.
Kohala (1-1, 1-1) at Kamehameha-Hawaii (0-3, 0-1) — Cowboys are pesky, Warriors are young. Give the nod to the home team. Kohala might be a bit weary after a 100-mile trip to the KS-Keaau campus. Pupule says: Warriors 24, Cowboys 17.
