Saint Louis-Damien full story

Here's the rest of my story, the entirety that was cut in today's Star-Bulletin due to space limitations.

No. 1 Saint Louis 54, Damien 27
Micah Mamiya threw for 198 yards and a touchdown, and scrambled for 150 more yards and four touchdowns as the Crusaders ran away. Saint Louis improved to 5-0 in ILH play and clinched at least a tie for the ILH title.

The Crusaders amassed 497 total yards as Mamiya completed passes to seven receivers. Defensively, they sometimes stacked the box and limited Damien's Kama Bailey to just 33 yards on nine carries.

Damien junior Anthony Tuitele, with just two weeks of work at his new position, guided the Monarchs on a nine-play, 52-yard scoring drive to open the game. His quarterback draw for an 11-yard touchdown run gave Damien a 6-0 lead with 9:53 left in the first quarter.

After that, Saint Louis seized control. The Crusaders scored touchdowns on all six of their possessions in the first half. Mamiya did his best J.C. Watts impression, running the option flawlessly.

Saint Louis rushed for 244 yards by halftime, and Mamiya scored on runs of 6, 22 and 12 yards. He also threw for 174 yards without a turnover as the Crusaders took a 41-12 lead into the lockerroom.

Damien's second touchdown came on an oddity of a play. Tuitele connected with Chris Cross for a 27-yard gain, but the receiver fumbled at mid-field. Bailey recovered and advanced the ball 53 yards for a touchdown. That gave Bailey credit for 53 receiving yards, but the credit for the reception and the first 27 yards still went to Cross.

Tuitele threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for two more scores. Damien finished with 313 total yards.

Saint Louis improved to 19-0 with Mamiya as the starting quarterback.

"Coach said don't take anybody lightly," Mamiya said. "Their defense never gave up."

Neither did Saint Louis' defense. "They did a nice job stuffing everything up front," Damien coach Brian Derby said. "Their intention was to stop Kama."

Tuitele's development was a highlight. "Our O-line did a good job picking up blitzes. I'm proud of (Tuitele). Our receivers caught some nice passes," Derby added.
