Pac-Five/Iolani full story
Posted at 8:39 PM
Another game story that we didn't have space for in today's Star-Bulletin. You can read it in its entirety here.
Pac-Five 21, No. 10 Iolani 14
The Wolfpack came up with a turnover-free game and shut the Raiders' potent run-and-shoot offense out in the second half to pull off the upset. Jaime Rivera rushed for 88 yards and Jon-Ray Rodrigues threw for 153 as Pac-Five won its first game in league play after four defeats.
Despite the loss, Iolani (3-2) moved a step closer to the Division II title thanks to Damien's loss earlier in the day. Kela Marciel threw for 276 yards, but the Raiders' last-chance drive ended at the Pac-Five 28-yard line. Marciel faced a fierce pass rush from Wolfpack lineman Aaron Tipoti, and his fourth-down pass to Ronnie Hirokawa came up short.
"He's a great player," Tipoti said. "Coach asked one more play of me. He sees something in me I don't see."
Pac-Five made use of a three-man front for most of the night, giving up short passes without surrendering the deep ball often. The 'Pack generated 139 rushing yards on 42 attempts, eating time off the clock and keeping its defense well-rested in the second half.
Iolani struck first, with a 32-yard touchdown pass from Marciel to Lionel Fujioka with
8:21 to go in the opening quarter.
Pac-Five answered early in the second quarter with a 6-yard touchdown run around the right side by Phillip Sarubbi to tie the game.
Iolani drove 79 yards in 10 plays and regained the lead on Marciel's 1-yard keeper to paydirt. Iolani led 14-7 with 7:46 to go in the first half.
A roughing-the-passer penalty kept Pac-Five's ensuing drive alive, and Sarubbi hauled in a 4-yard touchdown pass from Rodrigues as the 'Pack tied the game at 14 with 2:31 left before halftime.
Before intermission, Pac-Five drove 50 yards in just four plays. Sophomore Darren Kamealoha, a recent call-up from the junior varsity, hauled in a 24-yard corner-route touchdown pass from Rodrigues. The 'Pack led 21-14 with 12 seconds left in the half.
Iolani drove no deeper than the Pac-Five 21-yard line for the duration of the contest.
"We worked together better as a team. We weren't happy about last week's game," Tipoti said, referring to a televised loss to Kamehameha. "Our offense moved the ball and that gave us more of a break to recoup."
Iolani finished with 22 rushing yards on 21 carries.
