The solution to NFL's weak OT rule
Posted at 1:42 PM

It's so simple, I don't know why nobody has mentioned it before.

Watching the Chicago Bears rally to beat Denver in overtime is no different than any other OT game that ends too easily: on the foot of a placekicker.

Nothing against field goals, actually. But for 60 minutes of bone-breaking work, a game should be decided with a little more effort. That's why I propose this:

No game shall be won in overtime unless a team scores at least 4 points.

This way, no team wins on just one field goal in overtime.

This way, a field goal isn't enough, and the defensive team will get the ball back -- as it should.

A second field goal would provide the victory. Fair enough to me.

Kick a field goal, get a safety, game over. Kick two field goals, game over. Score a touchdown, game over.

Simple, effective and much more fair than the current, outdated, prehistoric overtime system.
