Hilo overwhelms Aiea 48-42
Posted at 3:55 AM
No room in the Star-Bulletin for the Aiea-Hilo game, so here it is.
All-State forward Vicky Tagalicod scored 12 points and senior guard Aisha Sueda sparked a 21-5 second-quarter run as the visiting Vikings conquered Aiea 48-42 Saturday morning at Na Alii's gym.
The win was Hilo's second on a three-game, two-day swing of Oahu. The Viks edged Mid-Pacific 45-41 on Friday, and completed a sweep by clipping the Kalani Falcons 43-42 on Saturday night.
Hilo's late-morning victory at Aiea was surprisingly one-sided in the second and third quarters.
Aiea trailed 11-10 entering the second quarter, but Sueda found her range and swished two treys over a zone defense. She had 10 of her game-high 15 points in the quarter as the Viks took a commanding 32-15 lead into halftime.
Aiea trailed 46-28 after three quarters, but mounted a comeback when Tagalicod and Sueda went to the bench. Free throws by Natasha Helsham brought Na Alii within 48-41 with 2:02 left, but Tagalicod and Sueda returned and held down the fort.
Helsham finished with 16 points and Natasha Fong added 10.
Coach Ferdie Masulit promised his team that they'll finally get to do some shopping on Sunday ... after the games are done.
