Leftover notes from last night's opening round of the Hawaiian Airlines/HHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships.

I covered the Konawaena-Moanalua and Radford-Roosevelt games at Farrington for the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

>> Awa's team lost most of its firepower and brought in three freshmen this season. "(Moanalua) was denying Mana. We missed some shots, Kara missed a couple of layups and we started to play shy and stop ourselves," Awa said. "Kara did great once she got her confidence."

Konawaena will face Punahou tonight in a rematch of last year's title game. "It's just like old times," Hopkins said. "We had a lot of people who didn't think we'd go this far."

>> "We played our whole preseason without her, so I was confident," Radford coach Tani Dutro said, happy about her team's rebound from last week's OIA title-game loss. "After that, we had to regroup. We didn't have time to sulk about it. Tonight, they showed they're ready to go."

Radford, the OIA runner-up, shot better from the field (59 percent on 20-for-34 shooting) than it did from the foul line (20-for-38, 53 percent). The Lady Rams outrebounded the Rough Riders 29-20.

Tasia Kamakawiwo‘ole led Roosevelt (17-8) with 12 points.

Radford blazed to a 25-6 lead, but the margin melted away. Roosevelt pulled within 27-23 early in the third quarter after Tiyana Nakasone drilled a 3-pointer.

The Lady Rams extended the lead to 39-27 before Roosevelt made one last run. Kamakawiwo‘ole's free throws pulled the Rough Riders within 39-33 with 6:14 left, but Roosevelt got no closer. Radford made 13 foul shots in the final quarter.

Radford will meet fourth-seeded Lahainaluna in today's quarterfinals.
