It's all in the shade of green

Under Armor's redesign of the UH football uniform is good off-season fodder.

The new Honolulu Star-Bulletin Poll asks viewers if they like the redesign of UH football uniforms. Frankly, the illustrations provided by Under Armor are really nice, but I hate that shade of green. It's a military green tone, almost, very similar to the New York Jets. Nothing against the military or the Jets, but bleaaaah.

I'm in the minority. With 829 votes in, nearly 70 percent like the new look. I don't hate the design, actually. The helmet stays since UA doesn't make helmets. And the multi-color scheme with the sleeves is very video-game sleek. But I take my uniform designs pretty seriously, whether it's the Lakers, Rams or Team USA.

Pluses
> Helmet status quo
> New tapa-style design on shoulders and sleeves
> Green pants for away games (reminiscent of the Tomey/Wagner era road unis)
> Green socks with the home black/green unis

Minuses
> No silver helmets
> No silver pants
> Black socks, shoes and long sleeves are a bit much on the white and green roadies
> White top and green pants are OK, but not with a green helmet (klunky bobble-head effect)

Basic golden rule of road uniforms is that a dark helmet and white top go best with white pants. Or lightly-shaded pants. The best alternative was the Raiders look. I am not a Raiders fan, but that was the best road uniform by UH since the aforementioned Tomey-Wagner era (white helmet, white top, kelly green pants).

Overall, I can't say I hate the redesign. As long as Under Armor keeps the "Warrior Green" color that original logo/uniform designer Kurt Osaki brought it, it'll work. Warrior Green (the dark green helmet tone) is a whole lot different from the Jets green in the Under Armor illustration. The helmet, especially under the sun, really kicks butt. There's a layer of dark green glitter that sets the whole thing off, unique from any other helmet. (I had photos of it at the UH practice field from years ago. Gotta find those.)

The one plus is that the pure black, Darth Vader look is done. I could see having that look occasionally, but when June Jones and the players went to that look exclusively for home games, it got old real fast. Kind of like the single guy who gets up, late for work, peeks into his closet and puts on whatever has matching colors on top and bottom. Not much creativity there. I actually preferred the pre-Darth Vader look.

I'm still a fan of the old retro uniforms. Wearing those once or twice a year would be brilliant. I like the logo of the Warrior guy better than the multi-colored UH rainbow (gender equity).

Hmmm... what is UH going to do with all those silver helmets now? I've always wanted a helmet. Any UH helmet. Here's my chance, maybe.

Bottom line: Anything that affects UH football taps into the pulse of Hawaii fans in a big way. That's good for the Warriors.
