... a hardass boss -- or coach -- versus the nice boss (or coach).

More often than not, the hardass boss is fair, sometimes very fair. The nice boss/coach? Plays favorites, can't toughen up when he or she needs to be tough, can't discipline his people. Not always, but often enough, the nice guy is the passive guy who can't spit the truth straight.

Give me the hardass, fair boss over the sugarcoating softie any day. Just my perspective after 18 years on the job.
