The mountain approaches

Some of us in the media consider this to be a gargantuan week.

Fortunately, for me anyway, I can focus on one story at a time, whether it's baseball, volleyball or anything else that gets served up on my plate. There was OIA volleyball yesterday. Waianae and Roosevelt emerged from the semifinals with convincing wins. Roosevelt has weaponry left and right, size in the middle, and their bigs are their go-to hitters. Waianae is balanced, not as tall, but has persistence at the net and excels in the back row. It's gonna be a classic big hitter-versus-small ball kind of match on Thursday.

But baseball reigns today in both Division I and II. The state tourney, for D-I, is being played entirely at Murakami Stadium thanks to the kokua of the UH baseball program and Coach Mike Trepasso. The kids, well, they're kids and will be in awe for an inning or two. I haven't seen the new turf there, so I've got some checking out to do.

Today's round has teams I've wanted to see for quite some time, like Kamehameha-Hawaii and Baldwin. I'd also love to see Kauai, a team ranked in the Star-Bulletin Top 10 all season long, and St. Anthony when they open play as seeded league champions on Thursday. Looks like I'll have to wait on that. I just go where the boss says to go and that's all I can do. Nobody can be in two places at one time.

So there you have it. With volleyball, baseball, and the opening of the water polo state tourney today, there's much to see this week. There's also the second round of the girls state golf tourney on Kauai. I'm too old to bemoan anything. I'll just enjoy whatever I'm at, wherever I'm at as fully as I can.

Fake dirt, anyone?
