Quick hits II

The opening day of a state tournament is usually a prologue quickly forgotten once the big bangers enter the picture on Day 2.
But for now, here are some quick thoughts.
> Kelcey Viliamu of Waipahu has to be the most powerful hitter I've seen this season. The only one who approaches her physical strength is Makani Duhaylonsod of Mililani. A comparison might not be apt -- Makani has been battling a sore knee -- but they're in the same range. Kelcey's mammoth homer yesterday off Moanalua's Sarah Robinson had some major hang time. A sight to remember, even in defeat for the Marauders.
> Lefty Joslyn Eugenio was superb for Sacred Hearts. Her stuff was cutting both corners, and a wide strike zone didn't hurt her. The four-hit shutout with no walks against Kailua came as she didn't have her full repertoire: her drop wasn't on yesterday. It's always interesting to see how teams that were very recently in Division II (Waipahu and SHA) are faring in D-I. Still tough.
> The skinned infield at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium gets raked and watered down between each game, but that doesn't help smooth out the bumps at short and second. There were some funky hops yesterday, and it got worse by the last game of the night. Kailua had five errors, some as a result of the uneven turf. It's not something that's immediately correctible, though. UH has used this field all season, and with games from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, there's no time for a George Toma-like renovation.
Teams like Sacred Hearts, which practices at well-worn Crane Park in Kapahulu, are more comfortable with a challenging infield turf. Teams like Kailua, which practices on a pristine, manicured -- and slower -- infield on campus, just aren't used to the surface. You could see it when they didn't get their gloves down quick enough. That's not deliberate. That's simply a matter of training and habit on a different field.
Not an excuse. Just the reality. If you're going to play at UH's field late in the season, you may want to consider practice at the lumpy neighborhood field.
