The other side of Khan

Old pal, good buddy Greg Hornet turned me on to this film about Genghis Khan.

From what I remember from history class, Genghis Khan was more than just a marauding killer of villagers and invader of lands. This film, produced in Russia, shows the other side of Khan that some historians never wanted to reveal. But this film, Mongol, starts out with Khan as a kid.

Takes a minute to download, but it's worth the wait. I think of Khan as somewhat well-rounded for a warrior. He rarely killed those he conquered once battle was done. Respected the local religions. Recruited new soldiers prolifically from those he defeated. He commanded loyalty, yet was fierce and horrific to those who stood in his way. Someone like that has charisma and violence in his nature. I have doubts about whether this kid actor can pull this off. Looks a little soft and too nice to be the future Great G. We shall see.

One of my other old pals, JJ, was a big Genghis fan when we were kids. I say fan because JJ was fanatical about the Great Khan and how he was a great warrior. JJ was also bothered that Khan's son, Kublai, just wasn't up to the task, not the great scurge that his good ol' dad was, and thus, the Empire eventually failed to venture beyond Eastern Europe with lasting success.

I'm looking forward to this film, which will be out this summer. I'll look forward to it more if JJ goes to see it, too. If I can get his reaction on camera, you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. If there were a Genghis Khan Fan Club, he would be the president.
