If Honolulu is the finest city in the U.S. ...

... why do we keep wrecking our historical landmarks?

This morning's story about Honolulu being the No. 1 city in America may cause some head-scratching. But when I saw that Honolulu is 28th internationally, behind Vancouver, Canada, it made some sense. Vancouver ... one of the cleanest places I've seen. Every lawn manicured. Barely any litter on the streets and sidewalks. I mean, it's a relatively boring place to visit, but it's also pristine.

I do wonder, though, if other great cities like San Francisco make it a habit to knock down a growing number of historical buildings. (Varsity Theater anyone?) At the rate we're going, Honolulu is going to be a clone of any generic city on the mainland.

We need thinkers. We need developers with the same creativity of those who think outside the box, as they did with Camden Yards in Baltimore. Blend the old with the new. Is it really that friggin hard?
