Summertime Sickness
Posted at 12:00 PM

Last year, it was me who worked too much, too long and had the flu for the entire month of July. This time, it's my nephew.

Yep, I probably should have recognized the signs ahead of time. He played (again) for two baseball teams, which meant practice and games five days per week. Sometimes six (before the game schedule began). He was fine though.

But as the spring progressed, he hit the schoolbooks harder and longer, aiming for straight A's. He was dedicated, never needed a reminder from me to study (aside from the momentary distraction of Fresh Prince of Bel Air or the George Lopez Show). I started to get a little concerned when he'd study past 9 p.m, past 10 occasionally.

It was only in the past week, when he caught the flu from one of his friends that he had to miss time for summer school and baseball practices. The flu has lingered. He had a fever of 102.9 over the weekend, the same day that he missed his first game. That bug, plus the sprained wrist he got from dodgeball (yes, it's a violent sport no matter how many times you laugh through the movie), wore his system out.

So he's still sick, fever around 101-102, and I'll see him later today. Just can't help thinking about how I was sick last year, just run down to the ground. With my nephew, at least he can just lie in bed all day and night until he heals up.

Other than that, yeah, I'd trade places with him. The drummer boy's got the life.
