Another sub-par week last time, 14-7. Overall 39-19 for a .672 percentage -- far, far below the standard of .800 for prep games. I suckie bad.
ere's my guess at this weekend's games. I missed doing a pick on the Kamehameha-Davis (Utah) game (yesterday). Too bad. I would've picked the Warriors and gotten a 'W.'
Friday's games
Ka‘u at Konawaena. In case anyone wonders, the okina is necessary in Ka‘u, otherwise it sounds like 'cow.' Pupule says: Gang Green stays unbeaten with a 44-0 win.
Honokaa at Hilo. Talk about a toss-up. Hilo is rebuilding under a new coach. Honokaa has played just once so far (against St. Anthony). Pupule says: home team rules, Viks 20, Dragons 14.
Bonita Vista at Kamehameha-Hawaii. BV is a solid team, but no Cali powerhouse. KS-Hawaii, though, is getting its footing under a new coach (Brian Kelson). This is another pick 'em game. Pupule says: Bonita Vista 25, Warriors 15.
Damien vs. Iolani, Aloha Stadium. The Monarchs are 3-0 and ready to march to an ILH D-II crown. Iolani, the defending league champ in D-II, lost a lot of experience and skill to graduation. However, with Jarrett Arakawa now entrenched at QB and getting the reps (my guess), the offense should settle down. Who can cover Kela Marciel? Pupule says: Raiders 34, Monarchs 27.
Pac-Five vs. Word of Life, Aloha Stadium. Another potential thriller at the stadium. Joe Onosai coaches against his "alma mater". Emotions will be high, but WLA has been efficient at the Double-Wing offense for more than three years now going back to the ILH's Intermediate league. Pupule says: New wrinkles lift the Firebrands over the Wolfpack, 33-26.
Farrington at Castle. A true matchup of contrasting teams. Power versus finesse. West Coast versus Run & Shoot. Castle thrives when Blake Rapozo has time to throw. Farrington thrives when V.J. Fehoko tees off on immobile QBs. Pupule says: Rapozo will run, but the Govs win, 27-21.
McKinley at Kailua. The Surfriders are resilient, and playing at home helps. Tigers are capable of big plays (Wil Starks, Tevita Woodard), but the lack of depth can be a challenge late in the game. Pupule says: Blue & White 15, Black & Gold 14.
Waianae at Pearl City. The Chargers are fairly tough against the run, but Waianae has 290 pounds of bulldozing love in Eleu Wilson. Pupule says: Seariders triumph at the Bino, 41-10.
Nanakuli at Kapolei. The Hurricanes are trying to move on since injuries to Chad Lopati and Luke Spencer. The Golden Hawks have speed in the backfield and would love to grind out the clock. Pupule says: 'Canes swamp their neighbors, 33-20.
Kalaheo at Aiea. The Mustangs have played well on the road, and Aiea is rebuilding. Word to the wise: Kalaheo should think twice about trying to score in the final minute again. Folks might not be so nice this time. Not at Aiea. Pupule says: Mustangs 30, Na Alii 21.
Anuenue at Moanalua. Interesting battle between Anuenue's newly-installed Double Wing and Moanalua's spread option. Moanalua beat WLA, which runs a good Double Wing, 25-6, three weeks ago. Pupule says: Na Menehune run away, 35-14.
Campbell at Radford. This game has all the signs of becoming a shootout, an aerial circus. Don't be shocked, though, if Rams coach Fred Salanoa slows the tempo. Pupule says: Sabers 44, Rams 41.
Saturday's games
Punahou at Central Kitsap (Wash), Qwest Field. Central K has some talent, but doesn't have a history of football dominance. Still, Punahou will likely be without QB Cayman Shutter (shoulder), which means it will lose Kimo Makaula as a TE. Makaula is a capable QB and is a load to bring down (225 pounds). Central K would be smart to run away from LB Manti Te‘o. Pupule says: Punahou 25, Central Kitsap 19.
Kahuku at Roosevelt. The Rough Riders pulled out a miraculous win over mighty Kahuku a few years back, using their Duck and Flamingo offenses on the old grass-and-rock turf of the Ticky. This time, though, aviary tendencies are on the wane because of their QB's thumb injury. Pupule says: Red Raiders 41, Rough Riders 21.
Waipahu at Mililani. This is a really intriguing matchup between an old-time program on the rise again and a powerhouse searching for its first win. I'd pick a tie here, but that wouldn't be right. Can the Trojans find a way to shut down Waipahu FB Troy Matautia? Pupule says: Sorta. Mililani's kicking game proves valuable in a 17-14 victory.
Kalani at Waialua. Nakasone Field will be covered with red, but the Bulldogs are simply deeper and bigger. The Falcons, storing talent away on the JV, are a year away. Pupule says: Waialua 36, Kalani 14.
Kohala at Hawaii Prep. Ka Makani routed the Cowboys in two meetings last year, but Kohala has a playmaker this season. Pupule says: Preparation helps HPA in a 30-26 win.
Keaau at Waiakea: Last year, these were the challengers to Kealakehe's throne. This year? More of the same, though Kealakehe and Keaau are rebuilding, while Waiakea has actually improved. Pupule says: Warriors give William Tolentino his first win, 32-22.
