Love 'em or hate 'em, divisions are coming back to the Big Island out of necessity.

My notion of a full-season, round-robin format is actually impossible. At the recent HHSAA executive board meeting, the leagues talked about cost-cutting measures. For the BIIF, that means short trips are preferable. The North-South Division format is coming back.

If and when the BIIF goes to D-II entirely (I would include Kealakehe there based on 1. the Waveriders' "struggles" this season, 2. OIA has massive schools in D-II) that would probably mean home/away for the North.

NORTH
Kohala
Hawaii Prep
Kealakehe
Konawaena
Honokaa

SOUTH
Hilo
Waiakea
Keaau
Kamehameha-Hawaii
Ka‘u

Play your division twice. Fill in the rest of your schedule with exhibition games against the other division, as well as games against anyone else. With only 8 games that would count in the standings, there would still be time for both nonconference and playoff games.

I like this format

• First round
North 1, South 1, bye
North 3 @ South 2
South 3 @ North 2

• Second round
Winners in semifinals
North 1, South 1 host

• Third round
Championship
Alternating host (North, South)
