A pupule look at tonight's state-tournament games.
No. 5 Leilehua (9-2) vs. No. 6 Baldwin (8-1), War Memorial Stadium
Baldwin still has a solid defense. Leilehua still has a prolific offense. Does this come down to the kicking game? The Mules have a solid placekicker in Micah Kunioka, who had three field goals in a game early in the season. Or does it come down to how well each team uses its best talent. Mana Rosa is a weapon as a D-end, but how much can he do as tight end? If the Bears can keep the chains moving, they can pull this off. Pupule says: Mules escape from the Bears, 17-15.
Winner plays Leilehua next Friday at Aloha Stadium.
Kealakehe (9-2) vs. No. 4 Farrington (8-3), Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium
Kealakehe has been fairly competitive against the OIA third-place teams in recent years, but the talent dropoff from then to now is significant. The Waveriders didn't dominate the BIIF by any means, and their offense is one dimensional. The Governors have talent all over their defense. That should be enough to wrap up Kealakehe's playmaking quarterback, Jordan Ursua. Pupule says: Governors veto Waveriders 27-16.
Winner plays Punahou next Friday at Aloha Stadium.
No. 9 Campbell (10-1) at Konawaena (10-2), Julian Yates Field
The Wildcats are banged up, but still resilient. Campbell has a size advantage, but the run-and-shoot offense is dependent on timing and reads. The Sabers don't have a huge defense, but they're quick. Isaac Torres is a great closer. It's fair to say that Campbell's TV time in the OIA White final was advantageous to Konawaena, though the teams have exchanged video. In the end, though, BIIF teams have a history of struggling mightily against great passing teams. Pupule says: Sabers roar 33-14.
Winner plays Iolani next Friday at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.
Radford (8-3) vs. Kauai (8-0), Vidinha Stadium
This could turn out to be a classic. The Rams have a lot of balance, a lot of weapons. Fred Salanoa would love to run that clock with long, grind-it-out drives. That would keep Kauai's run-and-shoot offense on the sideline. Radford's seen its share of the run and shoot (Campbell) and will be somewhat familiar with the scheme tonight. Kauai's good this season, better than in recent years. Tough call. Pupule says: Red Raiders rally, 27-21.
Winner plays Lahainaluna next Friday at War Memorial Stadium, Maui.
