A pupule view of tonight's semifinal games.
Division I
Leilehua vs. Kahuku, Aloha Stadium. They haven't played each other in a couple of years, but both teams are familiar with the big stage. Rain or shine, it comes down to turnovers and field position. The Mules have no qualms about throwing the ball inside their own 50-yard line. Kahuku rarely throws the ball at all, but has struggled now and then with holding on to the ball.
Kahuku has the personnel to stick with Leilehua's prolific receivers, so I expect the Mules to unveil some new wrinkles to create advantages. Kahuku can win this game as long as turnovers are at a minimum. Tough, tough call. Pupule says: Mules 25, Red Raiders 23.
Farrington vs. Punahou, Aloha Stadium. The Buffanblu had two weeks to scout, heal and prepare for Farrington's West Coast offense. Getting ready for one of the best defensive units in the state is a different deal. If each team plays its best, the edge goes to Punahou and its explosive passing game. Farrington's 'D' has a way of taking offenses out of their normal success. Pupule says: Buffanblu 22, Governors 20.
Division II
Radford vs. Lahainaluna, War Memorial Stadium. The Rams have two effective quarterbacks and could surprise everyone by throwing the ball against a Lunas defense that gave up yardage against pass-first teams like Kamehameha-Maui. Then again, the Rams prefer to run first and control the ball and clock. The Lunas are solid and will be opportunistic if Radford's defense loses discipline against the modified Wing T. Pupule says: Rams 19, Lunas 14.
Campbell vs. Iolani, Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. Thought both teams love to throw the ball, I expect Iolani to exert some ball-control tactics. They'll no-huddle, but they won't be in any rush. Campbell's behemoths on the offensive line wore down Konawaena last week. Iolani would love to keep those bruising linemen off the field. Campbell will get a big test for the first time this season. Iolani has been tested many a time, and that win over Saint Louis in mid-season is invaluable to the Raiders' confidence. Tough call. Pupule says: Sabers 24, Raiders 23.
