For today's games ... talk about guessing!
It was tough enough putting together a Preseason Top 10 without the benefit of seeing scrimmages (when the rankings were made two weeks ago). But picking tonight's games is just crazy. Here goes.
Saint Louis at Waianae. If Waianae's new looks on offense have progressed, the field-position battle might be neutralized. Saint Louis has a tough 'D' with six starters back, three on the line. Other side of the ball, the Saints new O-line will be tested. Waianae won their last meeting at Torii Field. This time? Pupule says: Saints 14, Seariders 7.
Hilo at Kamehameha. Viks haven't played at Kunuiakea Stadium before, so this is a big step. Warriors are tired of banging heads at practice. They'll be ready, but not necessarily in mid-season form with three QBs still competing for the starting job. Pupule says: Warriors 29, Viks 7.
Castle at Pearl City. This could easily be a 3-hour game, possibly 4. Both teams operate the run-and-shoot offense, though Pearl City coach Kai Kamaka Jr. says his team will stick with reads by receivers and passers -- not the designated pre-snap routes other teams tend to favor. Either way, the Chargers will be tested. A win by the D-II Chargers over an established D-I program would be big. Experience will help the Knights in a thriller. Pupule says: Knights 34, Chargers 27.
Radford at Leilehua. Rams have some good athletes, but not a lot of depth. One of their best players transferred to his district school, and now is en route to Punahou via a non-football playing private school. Confused? Don't be. The Mules will have an edge tonight, but the rivals (this is the Spirit of Freedom Bowl) will be testy as usual. Pupule says: Mules 31, Rams 14.
Mililani at Moanalua. There's a lot of pride for Na Menehune, but the Trojans have more speed and depth. Pupule says: Trojans 24, Na Menehune 10.
Farrington at Campbell. This game was scheduled back when Campbell was expecting to play D-II for another year. But the Sabers petitioned to move up and traded places with Pearl City, a good move for both programs. Campbell slotback Samson Anguay may be the best pound-for-pound offensive player in the state, but he alone can't stop Farrington's punishing defense. Should be close, but the Govs will grind this out. Pupule says: Governors 28, Sabers 17.
