Mom's old sewing machine chair

She never liked the electronic sewing machines with high-tech stuff. She preferred her old-fashioned Singer.

The seat cover for the chair wore out, I guess, and she made a new one from ... I dunno what. This cover feels vinyl-ish.

She grew up in Kula during the 1930s and '40s -- no running water or electricity -- the second of nine children in a farming community, but spent most of her years at the deaf and blind school on Oahu. She always made do with whatever she had. On this chair, she sewed me and my brother Kimo all kinds of aloha shirts from scratch. Kikaida aloha shirt. Checkers & Pogo aloha shirt. Mom had skills!
