Sure, people were at L&L Hawaiian Barbeque for the $1 sirloin steak plates, but helping out student-athletes didn't hurt, either.
Check out my blog entry (with photos) at HawaiiPrepWorld.com.

Within an hour, 600 of the 1,000 $1 sirloin steak plates were gone.

They waited patiently under the sun on one of the hottest days of the year. It was nasty hot and humid.

The customers waiting on the street didn't get to the front door until 11:30 a.m. (30-minute wait), but it was worth it.

Here they come.

One cook looks amused. The other is stunned.

This nice lady, Josephine Shiu, signed a check for $100 to help student-athletes. Her grandson, Zegna Picano, watches. At right is L&L co-owner Eddie Flores -- Josephine's brother -- and at left is Keith Amemiya.

A rep from Central Pacific Bank shakes hands with Keith Amemiya after handing over a check for $500 to help student-athletes. At center is Eddie Flores, co-owner of L&L.

That's a big check!

Wallace Kam was in line, the first, at midnight. He wasn't just waiting for the $1 sirloin steak plate; he ended up winning a $200 coupon for a discount on Hawaiian Airlines' Honolulu-to-Manila flight.

By 11:55 a.m., the line was much shorter and more than 600 $1 sirloin steak plates had been sold.

This was good. Real good. I skipped the mac salad, but the steak was slightly salted, nothing more, and ono!
