- Fantasy profile: Kyle Galdeira, owner, Kailua Zebras
08/31/06
Last year I played in a 12-man league and it was my first fantasy football endeavor. I finished in second place, and the only reason I lost was because my running back Edgerrin James was taken out at halftime.
- Fantasy: New logo arrives, 2nd league may open
08/30/06
We never planned on a second league logo. That's why you see such simplicity in the Ohana League logo, and it is native to the environment of your beautiful state," Hacienda-van Goghodunce said. "The second one with the yak, the league sprung the order on us so late, we just kinda slapped it together. Sheesh, there are no yaks in Hawaii, right?"
- Sunday R & R
08/28/06
Yes, coaches need a little R & R, somewhere between the games, practices and staff meetings, but on Sundays, their workaholic tendencies come in handy. Working Sundays are nice for those of us who relish a quieter atmosphere. All the better and easier to concentrate.
- Pupule's Top 10 football ballot
08/27/06
George (Kahaku) Ka'ai is playing up to his potential. Boy, that was fast. A year ago, he was a raw, tall slinger who overthrew his targets often. This year, he's on the money and impressing our Star-Bulletin game reporters.
- Fantasy: HRCOFFL expands to 12 teams
08/27/06
At this point, the league includes a baseball coach, two basketball coaches (one is an assistant), a referee and a bunch of sportswriters.
- Did not know
08/27/06
Zachary Fujimoto (nine catches) and Jordan Ho-Ching (eight for 174 yards) are helping the 'Pack look a little more like the 1980s version that won two Prep Bowls.
- The 90-10 Factor
08/26/06
When the aforementioned basketball coach was told by the player on Day 2 of preseason tryouts that the player was leaving for a club volleyball trip to the mainland, he was shocked. The player had already missed all of the program's off-season conditioning workouts in favor of club volleyball. And worse yet, the player and the parents expected the coach to hold down a spot on the roster for the kid.
- Pupule Pigskin Picks
08/25/06
@ Mililani 27, Iolani 21. This has the makings of a potential classic. Iolani may exploit the Trojan secondary, but the Mililani offense is balanced and experienced, with all five starters back on the offensive line.
- As dominant as can be
08/25/06
It all still comes down to proving it on the court, and the regular season hasn't even started. I'd be shocked, however, if Kamehameha doesn't sweep through the ILH and the state championships.
- Fantasy: HRCOFFL kicks off expansion in Year 2
08/24/06
The HRCOFFL is a no-money league, meaning there is no wagering. The quest for a championship is strictly about love, obsession and addiction to the NFL.
- Fried brains
08/24/06
It is a hot summer afternoon, and all is well.
- You know what today is: Get help or get in the game!
08/23/06
We're all a bit older and wiser, settled into our lives and jobs, but still looking for that rush that comes when your quarterback delivers a perfect play-action strike to a wide receiver on a Z route. If I get to be decent again, the only real score I have to settle is with Darnell Arceneaux.
- Roll for the poll
08/22/06
Best offense in Division II. Iolani certainly moves the ball with precision, and you have to wonder, how do these kids remember all these hand signals and plays without ever huddling.
- Now I know
08/21/06
Did know: Quarterback Bryant Moniz (25 for 33, 286 yards, zero picks) would shine for Leilehua in a win over Kailua.
Did not know: Kailua slinger Zachary Akamine would throw two first-quarter scores to give the visiting Surfriders a stunning 20-7 lead.
- Oh, by the way
08/20/06
Maybe I'll perpetuate this oral tradition, refusing forevermore to learn big news by TV, radio, cellphone, telegraph (Morse Code™ is so 1890s, don't you think?), banging drums, conch shells or any other newfangled modern doohicky object of communication. Yep, I'll just stick to the ol' 'I don't know what the hell is going on, but my 10-year-old nephew can keep me apprised of pertinent information, such as lava flows, avalanches, tsunamis, floods, hurricanes and invasion of locusts.'
- Photo day is happy day at Punahou
08/19/06
he offense is in good shape with all of its skill-position players back. Building Punahou's roster on my NCAA Football 2007 video game will be a lot of fun. Is Brett Kan a 90 or 95 as a passer when I create a dozen high school teams? Is Miah Ostrowski a 93 or 96 as a wide receiver?
- Sleeper? Mililani is wide awake
08/18/06
Focused concentration and unity don't happen by luck. It requires work. Care. Commitment. That's plenty to ask for from adults, let alone 16-year-old kids. Mililani has those qualities in spades.
- Seoul Inn
08/17/06
For 7 bucks, you won't get a better, home-style Korean meal. The service was friendly and quick. I strongly recommend Seoul Inn if you love Korean food, are on a budget, and appreciate value. If you need fancy chandeliers and waiters in suits to enjoy a meal, go elsewhere.
- Football photo tour notes
08/17/06
Waialua. The Bulldogs are beep-beep speedy. They just don't have much size or depth. It leads to an interesting dilemma for coach Lincoln Barit. Should they use their potent offense to ring up the end zone like a pinball machine? Or should they use quarterback Caleb Forte's intelligence and instincts to grind out long drives? With a small, thin defense that doesn't hit as well as last year's squad, ball control sounds like the wiser gameplan.
- Red Raiders keep working
08/16/06
Kaniela Tuipulotu isn't the lone star on defense, but he's the one who will shine again. He had three sacks in one half against Aiea last year, and he's still got speed and agility despite climbing to 291 pounds. That's Division I defensive tackle size, and he's on the move as more than a handful of schools have made offers. Wisely, Kaniela is biding his time.
- The Asphalt Beckons
08/15/06
Mileage? Come on. Honolulu residents are so spoiled. A "long" drive, like town to Waianae, is 38 miles and takes about 45 minutes. Smooth, sunny and relaxing. On the Big Island, when I covered sports for West Hawaii Today for eight years, 45 minutes is a short drive.
- Mr. Baseball + Pupule on Jim Bouton
08/14/06
Mr. Baseball: Jim Bouton is one of my heroes. I believe his influence has extended to even today's Internet savvy fans, who are old enough to be his grandchildren. In "Ball Four," Bouton revealed a side of professional baseball that was gritty, angry, and hilarious, all at once.
- New era of Anuenue football
08/11/06
There won't be a lot of folks on the North Shore or Central Maui, even Honolulu, who will pay much attention when Kaimuki and Anuenue meet. For Palolo football diehards, however, it will be a clash of valley titans.
- Tim Chang, Shawna-Lei Kuehu
08/09/06
I just wish I'd started saving TC souvenirs long ago, beginning with that custom (green) UH jersey (thick embroidered numbers) offered by Champs in Pearlridge during TC's senior year. Might have been 50 bucks then, but it would just be a fine addition to the Pupule Throwback Collection today.
- Hour by hour
08/04/06
Lord knows, if I'm still writing on this site in my diaper-wearing years, you'll be calling me the whiniest Depends-wearing bastard on Planet Earth. And I will enjoy wearing that crown.
