  • Kaimuki is top dawg
    02/27/07
There are young hoopsters out there who saw that game on TV, who know that there is merit to working on fundamentals — ballhandling, free throws, looking for an open teammate — and trusting your coaches. The point is hammered home especially for public-school kids.

Heckle Gem of the Day:From an Aiea as Farrington extended its lead in the fourth quarter: "Eh, Aiea! The more points Farrington scores, the further you going fall behind!"

I like knowing that a little-seen, high-scoring player also plays superior defense from start to finish. Or that he doesn't.

  • Opening-round Miracle
    02/21/07
The pain of losing a heartbreakingly close game is real, but so is the joy of winning a state title. It's Big Dance week, kids. Have fun. I know I will.

  • Saturday blues
    02/19/07
But here's my take, after seeing (and now coaching) my nephew in the PAL Bronco B basketball league at Palama Settlement: Enter At Your Own Risk.

  • Pupule's Top 10 ballot, Feb. 18
    02/19/07
The strength and conviction of their wins was more impressive than those by KS-Hawaii, which is why I moved the 'Dogs ahead.

  • Post-game notes: OIA Red, White finals
    02/18/07
"Aiea is just a matchup problem for us. Maybe next time we'll play them, we'll find a way to get out to the 3s." —McKinley coach Bob Morikuni on Aiea

  • Post-game notes: Elimination games
    02/17/07
It doesn't make common sense, but neither does the lottery, but everyday people spend billions of dollars trying to land the big ticket. I just don't see why we need to feed our kids to the lions with a lottery mentality. A regular-season championship should be rewarded not in part, but in full.

  • Big Wednesday, Big Thursday, Big ...
    02/16/07
Basketball, Hoosiers' style, on three islands, one league. How sweet it is.

  • Good News Bears, part 2
    02/15/07
Hopefully, the spirit of what they stand for, the greatness of their sum total as a team, is always understood. What they did this season was just one facet on a gem that caught the sun's rays

  • Establishing peace
    02/15/07
So, where is the love? For goodness sakes, please check on your own before trouble brews. If the trouble comes from folks who aren't not your blood relation, but come from your school, take the wise measure and inform an athletic director.

  • To love ... or not
    02/14/07
I love: Drivers who generously give you the right of way in tight traffic. I love, not: Drivers who hold up traffic, trying to force their way into the right of way. Then they don't even acknowledge the other drivers who let them in. Bad, bad, bad.

  • Formats need tweaking
    02/13/07
This jackpot-lottery mentality of winning it all in the span of a week's worth of playoffs is fine for the NBA, which happens to be holding its all-star game (where else) in Las Vegas. Fine for them, not so fine a mentality for high-school student-athletes.

  • Perfection on the tube
    02/12/07
Ahh, perfection. It isn't on the boob tube. Never really was, aside from UH football laying a can of whoopass on BYU back in the day.

  • Pupule's Top 10 ballot, Feb. 11
    02/12/07
In just 24 hours, so much has changed.

  • 12 is nice, but 16 would be nicer
    02/11/07
There are plenty of quality teams in the BIIF. Plenty of quality teams in the ILH. This year, seven OIA teams are solid. In a 16-team format, the OIA would almost definitely enter eight teams. I can live with an eighth OIA entry that is so-so.

  • Surprise, surprise
    02/10/07
Iolani made it this far and has played at a level closer to their potential than any other team. Punahou has the ILH title, but don't be surprised if Iolani reaches the state final again.

  • TMI
    02/08/07
And that means there are more Division I-quality athletes who will either a) remain patient or b) run out of patience and take that slot at a small college. Nothing wrong either way.

  • Remember this
    02/06/07
Too much yelling turns any player deaf (not literally, but emotionally) after awhile. Too little intensity, whether in a game situation or a practice drill, do little good, as well.

  • Pupule's Top 10 ballot, Feb. 4
    02/06/07
The Machine barely gets by Maryknoll. Doc Mugiishi's concerns were valid.

  • Good News Bears
    02/06/07
These Bears were loveable. They've brought joy to so many people within and outside the program. Time will show how much impact they've made through their passion and diligence. We'll see soon enough.

  • Destiny for two
    02/04/07
Mililani has talent, an ace and experience. So does Baldwin. This final was inevitable. There are no ties in softball.

  • Ill, ill, ill
    02/02/07
But for now, Iolani is clearly the best team in the state. The Raiders create chaos with their defense, more so than ever.

  • Down, but not out
    02/01/07
The time has come for hardcore and casual Warrior fans to realize that Kamehameha-Oahu is no longer drawing the kind of physical height and talent pool in basketball that it once did.
