- Pupule's Top 10 ballot (Sept 30)
09/30/07
The skinny: Crusaders relied on defense, special teams and a strong ground game to get past the Warriors.
- Targets: Kahuku-Farrington
09/29/07
Alefesio Iu
No-huddle, first half: 5-for-5, 80 yards, one touchdown
No-huddle, second half: 2-for-2, 26 yards
Regular huddle, first and second half: 11-for-21, 96 yards, one interception
- Pupule Pigskin Picks, Week 7, Sept. 28-29
09/28/07
No. 8 Kamehameha (1-1-1, 0-1) vs. No. 1 Saint Louis (4-0, 1-0), Aloha Stadium -- Crusaders are executing in all three phases. Special teams makes the difference. Pupule says: Crusaders 16, Warriors 14.
- Pupule's Top 10 ballot (Sept 23)
09/23/07
Turnovers hurt, but the Buffanblu will evolve because of the loss to Saint Louis. Running Dalton Hilliard out of the I works against everyone else. I'm expecting some new wrinkles out of the I.
- Pupule Pigskin Picks, Week 6, Sept. 21-22
09/20/07
Who will bring the heat for Saint Louis? I'm looking for SL to put major pressure on Cayman Shutter while closing off the edge when Kimo Makaula is in the game.
- BIIF and Division II
09/19/07
The Big Island Interscholastic Federation should be in Division II for football. I've said this before. Nothing has changed. Hilo, Keaau and Waiakea are mid-sized schools that are competitive but smaller in numbers. Kealakehe is a larger school, but no bigger than the OIA's D-II schools.
- I'm right, the panelists are wrong
09/19/07
Our panelists also have Leilehua behind Baldwin, which is amusing. Leilehua has beaten quality teams like Kailua and Waianae on the road. The Mules also led Punahou before losing, and also came close to beating Mililani on the road. Leilehua is battle-tested, one of the top defensive units in the state.
- Pupule's Top 10 ballot (Sept 16)
09/16/07
The skinny: Looks like last season all over again. Crusaders are outstanding in all three phases. Staying healthy is the X Factor.
- Patience, Warrior fans
09/16/07
As the season unfolds, Kamehameha's offense will reach closer to its potential. Coach Stant was hard on himself after the game, but I hope he doesn't rein in the playcalling too much. These kids are smart enough to fulfill his vision of what offensive football can be.
- Pupule Pigskin Picks, Week 5, Sept. 14-15
09/15/07
Kealakehe (3-0, 2-0) at Konawaena (1-3, 1-1) — This is not a grudge game. True, Kealakehe assistant (special teams) coach Todd Brown was fired from his head coaching job by Konawaena last year. Yes, he was fired despite going 33-22. Former Konawaena QB Kawai Kanuha followed Brown to Kealakehe, just another fact. No grudge. Riiiiight. Pupule says: Waveriders open strong and tame the Wildcats, 35-14.
- Trail Blazers have repeated history
09/15/07
Oden is old-school, a reliable rebounder and medicore scorer. A good fit in the 1970s, but the new NBA rewards uptempo, multi-skilled players ... like Kevin Durant.
- The basic necessities of life
09/13/07
It's a subtle, but heartfelt way to remember a young man who left this earthly realm much, much too soon. It is also something that I would bet Coach Tong is enjoying, perched from his view above.
- Thoughts from the Carleton
09/11/07
The entire coaching staff, maybe the players, too, had T-shirts on under their game gear with a picture of Kaimi Tong. The assistant coach died recently and the entire team keeps his memory dear and close to their hearts. Literally.
- Visiting team had right antidote to Bears
09/08/07
Jaime Ortiz, San Clemente assistant coach: "It was a pleasure and an honor for our team to play in Hawaii. Everyone was so gracious from the hotel staff at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel to the players and coaches at Baldwin High School."
- ILH D-II football preview
09/08/07
Someone start up an ILH football TV network and I'll subscribe.
- Down year at Punahou? They're ranked No. 3
09/08/07
It's striking to think of Punahou and its depleted corps of talent. Liz Kaaihue and Larissa Nordyke were mainstays of the team for years. Now they're gone, and what? Punahou is still No. 3 in the Top 10.
- Pupule Pigskin Picks, Week 4, Sept. 7-8
09/07/07
Kalaheo at Kahuku, Saturday — Red Raiders are winless, proud and hungry. Winning at Carleton Weimer field is a rarity for visiting teams. Pupule says: Red Raiders 33, Mustangs 6.
- Pupule's Football Top 20 (Sept 2)
09/03/07
Here's how I'm voting in the Star-Bulletin Top 10....
- Torres looking for the perfect beat
09/03/07
That's why coaching in Hawaii, despite its lousy pay, is a priceless opportunity to truly serve. It is, in many ways, the greatest civilian sacrifice for the youth of our communities.
- Kamehameha is the volleyball Goliath
09/03/07
For now, though, Kamehameha is the top team in the state, and the upcoming Star-Bulletin Girls Volleyball Top 10 poll will likely reflect this. I hope fans can get out to Kekuhaupio Gym and enjoy something that comes along only once in a while: a true sports dynasty in Hawaii.
- And people wonder why I love girls basketball...
09/03/07
The best way to say "thank you" to your coaches is to play the way they taught you. They put their heart and soul into teaching you about the game, about life. So thank them now, while you still can, and thank them in every way on and off the field.
- Star-Bulletin Top 10, Aug. 27
09/03/07
He's not going to overpromise, never did. But as he rolled off the names and numbers for his defensive studs, I was amazed. I told him he has the kind of size and speed out there that fits a JC unit, not a high school.
