    But as for the J-Day competition held at UH, nobody, including us kids from Kaimuki, knew we'd end up on a stage in an old UH lecture hall, in front of a lot of people to get awards while the kids from Punahou, Iolani, etc. watched. That experience was an eye opener.

    On the Big Island, where healthy extracurricular activities for youth are limited, their perseverance has kept many kids focused on hoops and academics. That's a huge plus to the community of South Kona, and one more example of why the BIIF wisely allows high-school coaches to extend their teaching and commitment to pre-teen youth.
