  • No need for confusion
    02/27/08
Better to be safe than sorry, to inform everyone than to wonder if they got the note. Get yourself an answering machine. Use the text mode on your cell. E-mail gloriously and magnificently!

  • Epilogue: Boys state hoops
    02/27/08
More on all of that later. For now, Punahou is state champion by sheer will and hustle. Kamehameha-Hawaii came really close to pulling off the victory. Those facts are the only really simple facts about a week that was so, so strange.

  • Epilogue: Girls state hoops
    02/27/08
I'll miss seeing the girls basketball season stand alone. I miss it already. As I've said once before, putting the girls and boys seasons together in a place where facilities are limited is like one parent caring for twins. It's impossible to give them both the right amount of attention.

  • Kameron Steinhoff meets the challenge
    02/26/08
I wasn't the first to write about his injury (I think) back in September, and I won't be the last. I just like the fact that he and his family were so open to me, so willing to share their experience, painful and scary as it was. I'm glad they did. It gives me courage. It may give other folks courage, too.

  • Girls hoops notebook: Day 3
    02/26/08
    >> With a 3- to 6-inch height advantage on her defenders, Imai could have dominated on the low post, but Waiakea had her at mid-court all game long.

  • Kamehameha-Kahuku: Bonus notes
    02/22/08
The Red Raiders shot just 5-for-13 from the foul line after intermission, and Kamehameha was 7-for-7 in the final quarter.

  • Punahou-Lahainaluna unedited
    02/22/08
"We weren't together. We had the first-time jitters, maybe," said Craig, a 6-foot-3 junior. "Their press slowed us down a lot. We made simple mistakes and they got easy layups. And they have five, six guys who can go inside."

  • Girls hoops notebook: Day 2
    02/22/08
Give Iolani credit. The Raiders maintain a "One Team" approach, but have learned to get Jamie Smith a multitude of touches and shots, and Smith always comes through.

  • Boys hoops notebook: Day 1
    02/22/08
The drama only gets better from here. So much to see, so little time.

  • I hope it ain't asphalt
    02/21/08
My only question is, is the surface asphalt? If it is, expect at least one of the over-30 players to get back spasms and sciatic problems. I know it was true for me, which is why I had to quit playing on the nasty, rock-hard blacktop, a surface I grew up on back in the days at Ala Wai Park.

  • Girls hoops notebook: Day 1 bonus
    02/21/08
"We played our whole preseason without her, so I was confident," Radford coach Tani Dutro said, happy about her team's rebound from last week's OIA title-game loss. "After that, we had to regroup. We didn't have time to sulk about it. Tonight, they showed they're ready to go."

  • Girls hoops notebook: Day 1
    02/21/08
Athletes feed off their pack leader, now more so than ever. I have never seen a good high school coach stand there and show the world that he has given up. Not a good coach.

Aiea, McKinley, OIA, HHSAA, boys basketball

Iolani, Punahou, ILH, HHSAA, boys basketball

    McKinley, Kamehameha-Hawaii, girls basketball, HHSAA

  • Bracketology: Girls Basketball, Division I
    02/20/08
This is going to be far from perfect, I suspect. But here goes anyway....

  • Style points: Konawaena wins BIIF boys title
    02/17/08
Making shots will cancel out everything from bad calls to loud crowds to unfair homecourt advantages. So far, the most clutch player in the OIA post-season has been Scott Burns of Mililani.

  • After 30 years, Mililani breaks through
    02/17/08
The Trojans had relied on their senior floor general all season long, and they found a way to win with him sidelined by an Achilles tendon injury. I suggest that they also found a way to win by becoming fueled by Curtis.

  • Aiea-Farrington: The Art of the Sell
    02/17/08
But athletically, no other D-II team can match the likes of Aiea and Farrington. That's just a fact. Aiea and Farrington are big schools that should've been in D-I this year, and I know the players and coaches wish that were so. Aiea would've challenged Campbell and Mililani for the OIA Red West "title." Farrington would have strengthened the weakened Red East, perhaps challenging Kahuku and Kalaheo at the top.

  • Warriors head to Big Island
    02/17/08
It also means that Honokaa native Auwae DeRego will face his old friends and former teammates in the biggest game so far this season for both teams.

  • Wow, Mililani loses home court
    02/15/08
No hard feelings. But let's do what's right and fair, people. Don't screw it up for the kids.

  • Call or no call? Crusaders escape
    02/14/08
What I didn't understand is how they could let Tuiloma dip his shoulder and bull his way to the basket without calling anything ... and then whistle Ellsworth when Gonsalves initiated the contact. To me, it should've been a no-call all the way, and if anything, a charge.

  • Kahuku, Campbell are not really homeless
    02/13/08
For a financially-strapped OIA, it's simply a necessary way of life. That is, with one exception.

  • Surprised? Don't be
    02/13/08
That's how we treat the kids these days. An afterthought in the name of Almighty TV. Auwe.

  • Letter of Intent Day: Kamehameha Warriors
    02/09/08
Kamehameha Schools has riches in talent. On LOI day, volleyball, soccer and football players signed up for the future....

  • Letter of Intent Day: Leilehua Mules
    02/09/08
Slowly, but surely, LOI day at Leilehua is growing....

  • Letter of Intent Day: Kahuku Red Raiders
    02/09/08
Paipai "P.J." Falemalu, Alema Tachibana and Shiloah Te'o led the signees at Kahuku on Wednesday....

  • Why does OC 16 hate Kahuku?
    02/09/08
Think about it: Mililani could finish sixth in the West, but still get home-court advantage through the playoffs. Kahuku could be the first seed and never play at home.

  • Suns are in panic mode
    02/08/08
Sad, sad, sad. Phoenix is one of my favorite teams to watch, but with this move, I wonder what the hell management is thinking.

  • So much to do ...
    02/08/08
I like that the coaches from Waimea to Hilo will feel more like they have some input, lest we lose another Jordan Dizon to the winds.

  • Wana
    02/05/08
Gems in the sea during low tide....
