- Something about them hot dogs
04/30/08
I just wonder, when will someone in Hawaii serve up hot dogs with potato salad on top?
- The best pop music decade?
04/28/08
"Have You Seen Her" by the Chi-Lites. Written in 1971. Part of a hit parade that made the 1970s the best decade ever in pop music. Period.
- Ichiro's technique
04/28/08
To this, my question is, can Ichiro's style of hitting be taught effectively to kids here?

- Vog Day Afternoon
04/27/08
Ala Wai Field is the vast expanse of grass next to Ala Wai Clubhouse (which used to have ballroom dance classes back in the day). Ala Wai Field is not to be confused with Ala Wai Park, located next to Ala Wai Elementary School.
- Brew Review: Mac's Blackwatch Cream Porter
04/27/08
This lush, dark brew looks the part of a porter, even a stout. But the carbonation is refreshing and the brew goes down quickly, not syrupy.
- Brew Review: Makakilo Moons Batch No. 2
04/27/08
Don't let the homemade product lower your expectations. Jerry Campany has tinkered with alcoholic beverages and hot sauces for years going back to his career abroad in the military.
- Brew Review: Fire Rock Pale Ale
04/24/08
A true ale for the tropics, it has some nice carbonation going down, no funky aftertaste. Just crisp, just perfect with spicy pork rinds and smoked cheddar cheese.
- Suns sinking
04/24/08
If the Lakers meet the Celtics meet in the finals, that'll be cool, and I'll be in a strange position of cheering for both teams -- and I'm a Laker fan from the Mark Landsberger days.
- Brew Review: Weizenbock
04/23/08
This is a matter of taste. If you like a syrupy-sweet brew with major aftertaste, this is for you.
- Lovechile in the mouth of the lion
04/23/08
Lovechile rocked Red Lion Waikiki on Friday....
- Blood, Sweat & Tears?
04/22/08
But depriving a child of basic boundaries and rules is tantamount to anarchy, pure and simple, and the more I hear about this gibberish, especially when Amway people are preaching it, I really have to believe that they may have horns and a tail tucked away somewhere.
- What's in a number?
04/22/08
19 is also the college jersey number of Eric Dickerson, who was a 1-2 combo at tailback with Craig James.
- Brew Review: Grape Pale Ale
04/22/08
Interestingly enough, Lili is also a Samuel Adams employee. Bottom line: her creation is masterful. Takes a woman to really do something this inventive. Grapes and beer? Amazing.
- What I wish I knew way back when
04/22/08
The nice boss/coach? Plays favorites, can't toughen up when he or she needs to be tough, can't discipline his people.
- TV good, TV bad
04/22/08
Yeah, too much TV is bad. But good TV is good.
- Sluggers' Feast
04/21/08
We've got a lot of crafty pitchers, smart guys with great off-speed stuff. This is not the year of the heater. It's the year of the tater.
- Anonymity and Dishonesty on forums
04/18/08
When someone refuses to show face after spewing bile over the rest of us, it just confirms what we know deep down inside: It takes guts to show up face to face.
- A society of voyagers
04/17/08
Dennis Kawaharada, Hawaii, map, Marquesas, Polynesian Voyaging Society, Tahiti

- Brew Review: Grape Pale Ale
04/16/08
Interestingly enough, Lili is also a Samuel Adams employee. Bottom line: her creation is masterful. Takes a woman to really do something this inventive. Grapes and beer? Amazing.
- Sand Island rockers, Taiyo satisfaction
04/16/08
This morning, I looked in the fridge to make this my breakfast, but the goodies weren't there. Alas, I forgot to put them in the fridge last night. They sat on a counter, undeniably ruined.
- Know Ezogiku's strengths and be happy
04/16/08
The broth was thick, very Chinese style. The seafood was sweet, the noodles were flavorful and succulent. A mix of veggies, but the winning element was the broth. So tasty.
- It's a number
04/14/08
Maybe I should get a second job and slave away to the American Dream.
- A hole in your soul
04/14/08
We must've fed the fish (and crayfish) there a hundred times. I enjoyed every minute, every crumb we threw. Every popcorn kernel.
- Raise The Red Lantern: flute solo
04/14/08
- Iron Chef America: Cantu the creator
04/14/08
I was mesmerized by the use of high tech by both chefs, but Cantu clearly has taken it to an insanely geeky level that is very entertaining.
- Huy Fong on a remarkable voyage
04/14/08
Based in Rosemead, Calif., the Co was founded in 1980 by Vietnamese refugee David Tran. Huy Fong is the name of the boat Mr. Tran rode across the Pacific Ocean from Vietnam to the U.S. and the rest is history.
- Wii all love to play
04/14/08
... with new games on the forefront — tons of gaming companies underestimated the Wii and only now are developing games for the console — the Wii is here to stay.
- Some notes from the Old School
04/14/08
Kimo notes that the most unique thing about the old soda machine at the fire station was that it was an original RC Cola soda machine.
- Opening a chapter on Okinawa
04/10/08
... having grown up without knowing the difference between Japan and Okinawa was so unfortunate. Learning about the differences much later has been so rewarding.
- R.I.P. Varsity Theater (1938-2008)
04/07/08
Later in the day, a bank teller across the street asked how I was doing. "I feel sick," I said. "They just wrecked my favorite theater."
- Finally, a reprieve from the onslaught
04/07/08
The Blackburns, owners of the Mauna Kea Galleries now in the old restaurant, spent 10 grand to get everything in order for city requirements. I hope they make back everything they spent 100 fold!.
- Suze Orman? Whaaaat??

- Mopping up the competition
04/07/08
His job as an auditor, however, taught Cavanaugh that the need for janitorial services would always be around. A year later, in 1969, he set up Jani-King. He connected with clients by day, then went to work with the mop and pail by night.
- Hunt for Kamenrider leads to Toys N' Joys
04/07/08
In my search for all things Kamenrider, it was a pleasant surprise to find Toys N' Joys among the very first links....
- Of coral reefs and blind mullet
04/07/08
Will Kyselka, the University of Hawaii professor, was one of the instructors. Imagine that. A sage old guy dealing with 10-year-olds! He was cool. We went on field trips almost every day, including one to the UH quarry, known in the old days as Kamoiliili quarry.
- Were there menehune in Hawaii?
04/07/08
Manny explained that even as recently as 150 years ago, there was a large contingent of people in the valley, perhaps 200 strong. Were they descendants of menehune? No one knows for sure today, but King David Kalakaua actually wrote a book called The Legends and Myths of Hawaii. He supposedly writes that the menehune were real, and that the Lost Tribe consisted of 65 individuals according to a census.
