  • Profiling, stereotyping
    05/31/08
Without respect, the value of a life diminishes, and we have what we have. I can't help but wonder why some of us opt for the worst-case scenario. When sh*t hits the fan, the best thing any of us can do is walk. Go walk around the block, or for a mile, 10 miles. Whatever it takes to cool off.

  • Dude, his children were ordered to surf
    05/29/08
Imagine a 58-year-old doctor who shuts down a successful medical practice to go surf waves with his wife and nine kids. All the time.

  • Life
    05/29/08
My mom is one of the strongest people I've known, but abandoning her is not easy. It'll be hard. But sometimes loving someone means letting go. I just hope she still feels loved when it happens, after it happens.

  • Mongol: Pupule's hype machine
    05/28/08
Why do I have a fascination with this film? Well, as I wrote last week, it goes back a long way and involves my proud friend, JJ.

  • No myth here: Apple Cider Vinegar works
    05/25/08
I finally looked up a possible cure on the Internet. I came across apple cider vinegar as a cure on two sites. Really? Vinegar? I love vinegar. I should collect the stuff from all over the world.

  • Power Outage & American Idol
    05/25/08
My money's on the younger David to win (not literally). Too many teenybopper girls care enough to call in and vote.

  • The other side of Khan
    05/21/08
I'm looking forward to this film, which will be out this summer. I'll look forward to it more if JJ goes to see it, too. If I can get his reaction on camera, you'll see exactly what I'm talking about. If there were a Genghis Khan Fan Club, he would be the president.

  • Another tooth bites the dust
    05/21/08
I have a great dentist, same guy who fixed my injured teeth 25 years ago. (The music in the office is also a few decades old. I can always count on hearing songs in there that I haven't heard since 1979. There's always David Gates and Bread, but think of all the '70s and '80s crooners who were even more obscure than him.)

  • Numbers
    05/20/08
Staggering numbers, underwhelming numbers ... more on the baseball season and state tourney....

  • Cathedral Tour
    05/16/08
I'm still dreaming that Kamehameha Schools will grant Stadium Bowl-O-Drome a reprieve and use the retro facility as part of the architectural design when a new building goes up there on Isenberg Street, i.e. Camden Yards.

  • Quick hits II
    05/16/08
Not an excuse. Just the reality. If you're going to play at UH's field late in the season, you may want to consider practice at the lumpy neighborhood field.

  • So many games
    05/14/08
How did Punahou overcome the loss of Harrison (Jeeter) Ishida's pitching prowess? Depth. They always had depth, but it wasn't until the late part of the season than Reece Kiriu and Jeremy Fujimoto began to really shine.

  • Revisiting theories about Menehune
    05/13/08
The more I read, the more it seems the legend of Menehune is more of a fabrication to to downplay the reality of ancient Hawaii: politics....

  • Getting over Marvin
    05/13/08
After 25 years, I can't say that this knowledge soothes me or brings a sense of closure. I spent hours listening to his words and music. It won't hurt any less that he's gone. The truth just doesn't have that effect -- giving us contentment -- sometimes. It just doesn't.

  • SpongeTurf
    05/12/08
Outfielders have been repped to the max on their home fields -- almost exclusively natural grass -- and those reflexes don't change automatically overnight.

  • Baseball, Murakami Stadium and fries
    05/10/08
And as for the snack bar at the stadium ... hot dogs and burgers are standard. But what I need on a breezy, cool night is good ramen. Call in Ezogiku or Taiyo Ramen, please. If I were greedy, I'd ask for Tenkaippin, but I'm not, so I won't.

  • Way back when: Filipino pottery popular in Japan
    05/10/08
There's no way to separate maritime routes and migration, not in 16th century Asia....

  • Dogs + Chocolate = fatal
    05/10/08
What do dogs and the cacao plant have to do with history?...

  • The mountain approaches
    05/08/08
The state tourney, for D-I, is being played entirely at Murakami Stadium thanks to the kokua of the UH baseball program and Coach Mike Trepasso. The kids, well, they're kids and will be in awe for an inning or two. I haven't seen the new turf there, so I've got some checking out to do.

  • Huy Fong on a remarkable voyage
    05/06/08
Based in Rosemead, Calif., the Co was founded in 1980 by Vietnamese refugee David Tran. Huy Fong is the name of the boat Mr. Tran rode across the Pacific Ocean from Vietnam to the U.S. and the rest is history.

  • Robocon
    05/06/08
Robocon was anti-cool. But Robocon appealed to the little kids because he was basically a little kid in a giant robot's body.

  • Wreck-oning Times
    05/06/08
Does it just seem like a lot of classic spots are shutting their doors lately? Or is it reality?...

  • Guns, Germs & Steel
    05/06/08
Diamond's ability to weave history and simplify the power of Western weaponry — guns, germs and steel — makes for a fascinating watch. I wish we had this to watch when I was back in school.

  • Iron-y for Marvel
    05/06/08
How cool is it that one of my favorite brands -- one of my reasons for living when I was a kid -- is rocking the free world today....

  • Frazier and Ali
    05/06/08
Boxing provided a glimpse, back in the day, of America's soul. Today, things are much different. Marketing rules and the sport really has lost its vice grip over the public. Can you imagine an MME fighter holding the country captive as Ali once did with political statements?

  • Iron Man
    05/05/08
John Favreau retained the hard-hitting action feel of the comic book, but brought much more to the screen with great casting -- Jeff Bridges was utterly sensational as the (no spoiler here) -- and great effects. Iron Man wasn't a great comic book. But now it's a great movie. That's the magic of wondrous storytelling.

  • Silver Surfer collectible
    05/03/08
And then there was Silver Surfer, who gave up his own future to spare his home planet destruction at the hands of Galactus.

  • Ancient fashion in Japan
    05/03/08
Meanwhile, the Ainu in Hokkaido made cloth from elm fibers into shirts called attus. They look nothing like bingata and have more resemblance to designs from Western Europe, slightly Celtic, even.

  • The hoo-hah over 1.24 miles
    05/03/08
So for all the critics of this walk from Ala Wai to Punahou's campus, it's impossible to extract much sympathy from me. If anything, a walk helps to clear the mind, maybe reinvigorate the spirit. Why would I say that?

  • 'The sum of life'
    05/03/08
"From hard searching it seems to me tears and laughter, love and hate, make up the sum of life."

  • Eye exam vs. root canal
    05/03/08
Because one person is never supposed to give his or her everything to a job, or to a family only and nothing else. I need to go find my life, my other passions, and stay there some of the time. And let the people in charge be in charge.

  • Celtic fans love the drama
    05/01/08
Boston is not unbeatable. Just a myth pushed by New Englanders who are now choking on their own vomit. I'm a fan of Garnett, but I don't worship the ground he walks on.

  • Snoop de Coup
    05/01/08
But the fried chicken "problem"? I can see Boss Lady's concern, but if it were a chronic situation (no pun intended), Snoop would be fat, not a skinny toothpick.
