- Furikake kicker dressing
06/27/08
I'm no kitchen guru, but when there's a lack of variety in the fridge, I tend to make do....
- Summertime Sickness
06/26/08
It was only in the past week, when he caught the flu from one of his friends that he had to miss time for summer school and baseball practices. The flu has lingered. He had a fever of 102.9 over the weekend, the same day that he missed his first game. That bug, plus the sprained wrist he got from dodgeball (yes, it's a violent sport no matter how many times you laugh through the movie), wore his system out.
- Mo'ili'ili to Waipahu on TheBus
06/25/08
Maybe someone out there is sitting on that rattling Express, laptop open, writing the next great novel somewhere between Waipahu and Waikiki.
- Camping over the pond
06/25/08
Used to be a time when camping meant mosquitoes, flies and campfires late into the night. For football players, it now entails a voyage across the ocean to get first-hand teaching and evaluation from some of the NCAA's best coach
- Summer's here
06/25/08
Whatever happened to the cross-country, baseball-stadium tour I wanted to do in 1995?
- Obama ducks the dunk question
06/23/08
Notice in the video how Kimmel asks about dunking a basketball and Obama doesn't answer. Not that dunking means anything to dunkers. It's us non-dunkers who could only dream.
- Summer swell on H-1
06/23/08
Gas prices at about six or seven stations I passed yesterday rose again, as much as 4 cents in a one-day span. Ranged from $4.21 to $4.25 per gallon, and those were the cheaper stations.
- 'Service' at Hawaiian Air, Bubbie's
06/18/08
She looked at me with no apology, no sense of understanding. This is customer service at Bubbie's now? I'd just been there last month and the service was great. What happened?
- Crowning achievement
06/13/08
Even with insurance, this stuff ain't cheap, and they could've answered my questions easily if only I'd asked. I can't expect the doc to be talkative all the time, nor should I ever expect him to remember something I asked for a year ago.
- If Honolulu is the finest city in the U.S. ...
06/13/08
We need developers with the same creativity of those who think outside the box, as they did with Camden Yards in Baltimore. Blend the old with the new. Is it really that friggin hard?
- Mongol opens June 27 in Kahala
06/11/08
As I've written before, my old pal JJ is a huge Genghis Khan fan. I mean, fervent and fierce in defense of Khan. Always was.
- What's in a Sunday?
06/10/08
Funniest moment of the night was when UH football coach Greg McMackin almost forgot his UH 2007 football ring after having the 12 scholar-athletes look at it. It was in the trusty hands of Punahou swimmer Michelle Yoshida in the back row. That ring wouldn't have fit her fingers anyway.
- Moving forward one inch at a time
06/09/08
But when the gap between the haves and have-nots grows this big, revolution is in order. That's human nature, and when the difference becomes painful enough, i.e. budget limitations of have-nots, we may see a brave new world.
- March of the ADs
06/08/08
One of the issues that is likely to pop up, maybe even as a proposal, is the size of state-tournament fields. Travel costs are at a premium now, and though ADs are former players and coaches for the most part, they have, as I mentioned, budgets to balance. Money just don't grown trees, right?
- Bargain Iron and another one bites the dust
06/05/08
Hungry Lion is gonna be famished soon enough. Walgreens is building a store on that property, so say sayonara to the Lion.
- Thai curry and missing Al
06/04/08
Here's hoping that one day old Al will have Thai curry with Mr. Baseball and I again.
- PIAA Combine photo gallery
06/04/08
All in all, it was another great event for Doris Sullivan and her adopted ohana, the PIAA family.
- Post-season baseball, softball ... and football?
06/02/08
But minimizing the opportunities of local kids to get connected to potential recruiters ... that's blatantly anti-Hawaii. I hope Doris Sullivan, the Queen of Compliance at PIAA, follows through with the NCAA and sends in the request for an exception that would allow coaches to watch the combine up close.
