    1. Leilehua 2-0 (0-0 OIA Red West) Last week: def. Iolani 33-14 Mules did nothing to change my view. Though they're loaded with new talent on both sides of the ball, they haven't missed a beat.

Sure, Kealakehe has twice as many students (and parents) as Konawaena. So what?

"It was mixed emotions. I was happy to see my team, but it was kind of hard to look them in the eye knowing I can't play for them," he said. "But I had to be with them. They're my home away from home. My family."

I don't blame Brock, who had a game to cover that afternoon at HPA. But it's my humble opinion that the paper dropped the ball by not covering the Konawaena-Kealakehe game — a huge rivalry matchup — with another reporter. Maybe they had nobody else around. Maybe people are on vacation.

    1. Leilehua 1-0-0 Sure, Radford isn't an elite team, but they have a solid nucleus that could've been much tougher. Thing is, Leilehua takes pride in defense, and that unit carried the team last year while the quarterback position resembled a M*A*S*H unit in a war zone.

"Our whole goal was just to have our kids believe they can play with a great team," coach Joe Onosai said. "Our offense is something Kahuku's not used to. By the end of the season, Kahuku is always a different team. I'm glad we caught them early."

Still lots of kinks to work out for the new-look Red Raiders. Kamehameha, meanwhile, has been in camp, has gone through a lot of reps, far more than any OIA school.

She's not suffering any more. But I still needed her. It was too soon.

Should note that Castle's DE, #84, was outstanding against Kapolei regardless of first or second string. Had a couple of sacks, terrific swim move.

Now that he's been established, Coach Tokuda doesn't have to constantly stay on top of his troops. Oh, they need a little nagging sometimes, but winning a state championship has a way of getting the soldiers' respect and attention in an instant.

Quite an amazing family. They got around. I still think, though, that the best job on Earth belongs to Bourdain.

Cats don't respond well to people who give them whatever they want. They respond to calm, assertive leadership.
