• Te'o recruiting faux pas?
09/28/08
2. Low budget. UH didn't have a recruiting coordinator at the time. Can you imagine USC or Florida not having that position on staff? It explains in part why position coaches weren't always there, especially at the camp.

• A maverick view of the economy
09/28/08
Of course, a wiser person would have used credit cards, paid the bill on time and avoided interest -- exactly the kind of consumer credit card mafia truly hate.

• More Kamehameha-Punahou pupus
09/28/08
If he isn't gassed from chasing Ho and Kamano, Te'o figures to finally see action at running back. With the 230-pound Te'o and Hilliard, there may not be a better backfield in the state.

• Can't help loving the Fins
09/28/08
No, it would not work for an entire season in the pros. But Brown ran for four touchdowns, sometimes untouched, and threw a pretty pass for another score. What's next? The option?

• Pupule's Football Top 10 ballot (Sept 23)
09/25/08
Consider it the Strength of Schedule factor. Though Kalaheo and Konawaena haven't scored high with SOS, their 6-0 records are clearly worthy of something.

• Targets & Touches: Kalaheo vs. Radford
09/25/08

• Wildcats show aloha
09/25/08
Nice work by the Wildcats. In a sense, the lack of football coverage there can work in their favor. As a former Big Island sportswriter, I can't think of a greater story this season in the BIIF.

• MNF: Will I regret not starting Brett the Jet?
09/25/08
But as gametime drew near, I chickened out and went with Warner, who was hot in Weeks 1 and 2. More big-play targets and the coach has a commitment to throw the ball whether Arizona is ahead or behind.

• Targets & Touches: Kamehameha vs. Saint Louis
09/22/08

• Targets & Touches: Iolani vs. Pac-Five
09/22/08

• Receivers on a mission
09/22/08
Yep, Radford. Though they're D-II, their receivers have size and a coach who believes in the passing game. Shawn Putman-Curry (6-1, 205) has a lot of potential, but they have a solid, balance group, including a 240-pound TE (Andrew Forester).

• Targets & Touches: Saint Louis vs. Punahou
09/20/08

• Targets & Touches: Pac-Five vs. Damien
09/20/08

• Pupule Pigskin Picks, Week 6 (Sept. 19-20)
09/20/08
Edmund Kamano directs Kamehameha's offense with plenty of diversity, from speedy Ryan Ho to a plethora of precise route runners downfield. I smell trouble...

• More Fantastic 4
09/20/08
Mark Pollard proved back in the '90s that there IS talent in Ka‘u and it CAN become a competitive program with dedication and motivation. Jon Roddy is the right man for the job today. He played under Mark and understands what needs to be done.

• Recruiting is about persistence
09/20/08
Is this true? Does a 1-2 record spoil the recruiting process? Does UH lose potential recruits because of losses to Florida and Oregon State (on the road?)

• Pupule's Fantastic 4
09/19/08
Thursday, Sept. 18, 2008 There are only seven football programs from schools with enrollment of less than 700 students. Here are the Top 4 of these amazing teams....

• She heard, she knew
09/19/08
Now you may (or probably) think this is so tacky. Or religious. But for me, it's not. I knew right away that all these years that my mom said "God is watching over me," that wasn't just talk.

• Pupule's Small-School Football Top 10 (Sept 15)
09/16/08
Monday, Sept. 15, 2008 Small is relative....

• Pupule's Football Top 10 ballot (Sept 15)
09/16/08
Baldwin (2-1, 1-0) got DE Mana Rosa back, which stabilizes their defense. In time, the Bears offense will start to gel.

• Post-game: Saint Louis and Punahou
09/15/08
Jeremy Higgins' accuracy, especially on the out routes. Punahou had no answer and kept giving the outside rather than blitz and leave its corners isolated on burners like Billy Stutzmann and Lucas Gonsalves.

• Targets: Leilehua vs. Kapolei
09/15/08
Newman is in a category with just a select few, such as Punahou's Dalton Hilliard: running backs who are equally as effective and dangerous from the slot, or simply on RB routes from the backfield. Great hands, smart route runner, excellent after the catch. Explosive and disciplined -- every coach's prayer for an offensive skill player.

• What a pain in the ...
09/15/08
There's a reason why the brainiacs like Sagarin have wired their spreadsheets to run the formula without the heavy lifting.

• Obama throwback jersey
09/15/08
Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008 Heard about it, looked it up. Not so bad....

• Pupule Pigskin Picks, Week 5 (Sept. 12-13)
09/11/08
The difference could be Saint Louis' running game. If Austin Wakinekona (15 carries, 113 yards in two games) can go full tilt, the Crusaders may have the edge.

• 10 o'clock
09/10/08
When the busyness stops and I'm alone, when the car radio and the TV are off, that's when I miss her most.

• Aloha Ken
09/10/08
I'd tell him that I'd be glad to have the same passion and dedication he had when I'm nearing 60. A loving family, caring friends. He had it all. He also gave back tenfold. I only wish I can say the same one day. I'll miss you, Bruddah Ken.

• Pupule's Football Top 10 ballot (Sept 8)
09/10/08
Pupule, football, Top 10, ballot

• Prep football: WR target totals
09/08/08
So what do these numbers tell us? Well, they don't tell us whether a quarterback is helping his receivers. They do tell us that certain players have better chemistry with their passers.

• Pupule Pigskin Picks, Week 4 (Sept. 5-6)
09/08/08
Who can cover Kela Marciel? Pupule says: Raiders 34, Monarchs 27.

• Pop Warner football on Lanai
09/08/08
But the latest, according to the Maui News, is that Pop Warner football has sprouted on Lanai.

• WHT takes another shot at Konawaena
09/08/08
Daniel, what is your problem? Why continue ripping Konawaena (or any school)? You've got a set of flat tires and a bashed windshield ahead of yourself at this rate.

• Surprise: A Meleluca (Amway) plug during the eulogy
09/05/08
What my sister should've realized is that many of us had tough relationships with our parents, and being honest, being true, and showing that sense of remorse in spite of that friction is more real and more human than the fricking sugarcoat show with her celebrity buddy.

• A dream about Mom
09/04/08
The dream isn't just about simple, good times with my mother. It's about a lot of stuff that's been going on the past week, stuff that hasn't been totally resolved within the family.

• Notes on this week's football poll
09/04/08
Late into the night, though, Maeda has his quiet time. The new wrinkles might just show up during the wash.

• Pupule Pigskin Picks, Week 3 (Aug. 29-30)
09/03/08
Punahou at Castle — Castle has often played the big boys early in the year. Two seasons ago, Saint Louis escaped with a 17-13 win. It won't be easy for the No. 1 Buffanblu.

• Yankee Stadium: Hold your pee or die
09/03/08
Believing in God has nothing to do with telling a man when he can or can't take a leak.

• Maybe it just lingers forever
09/03/08
For me, the years she and I spent arguing and fighting were so wasted, looking back. But once we made peace, we became friends. Not right away, but little by little.
