  • The Kurt Rambis Alliance is born
    10/31/08
Friday, Oct. 31, 2008 Started up a new fantasy hoops league with oddball themes: defense, hustle and unselfish play....

  • Pupule Pigskin Picks, Week 11 (Oct. 24-25)
    10/25/08
    Friday, Oct. 24, 2008 Holy crud, it's Week 11?...

  • Pupule's Football Top 10 ballot (Oct 24)
    10/25/08
    Friday, Oct. 24, 2008 Here's how I voted in this week's Star-Bulletin Football Top 10....

  • Fantasy reality: better to take a loss today
    10/25/08
But the best alternative, aside from cutting Le'Ron McClain (not gonna do it) is to cut Donovan McNabb and pick up Derek Anderson, who got back on track last week against the Giants. After much thought, I just can't pull the trigger.

  • Escape from football's elements: Palin on SNL?
    10/25/08
Saturday, Oct. 18, 2008 You know there's something wrong with reality when it's almost impossible to tell whether that's the real Sarah Palin or just Tina Fey portraying Palin....

  • Pupule Pigskin Picks, Week 10 (Oct. 17-18)
    10/19/08
Friday, Oct. 17, 2008 A Pupule view of this weekend's games....

  • 9-4? Not so crazy now, am I?
    10/19/08
Friday, Oct. 17, 2008 Before the season, I predicted a 9-4 regular-season record for UH....

  • King of the Anagram
    10/17/08
Then came the grand pooba of his anagrams. Calhoun grabbed the first three lines of Hamlet's soliloquy ...

  • Babooses and bananas: who's really out of control?
    10/17/08
Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008 Sometimes coaches get out of hand. I've seen it, heard it, experienced it. But parents? Oh man, what more can I say?...

  • Review: Bar B. Que 99
    10/17/08
Overall, the chicken katsu plate at Bar B. Que 99 gets a 3 1/2 (out of 4) from me.

  • Time for a real coach
    10/17/08
McCain's new campaign honchos are largely Bush's old boosters. As much as McCain may have hated Bush before, he kowtowed and accepted the help. That kind of "help" doesn't come without a cost. If you think it's free, you're gullible.

  • Better Harris than Ron Artest
    10/17/08
Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008 My old friend, Saburo Akutagawa (a.k.a. Mr. Baseball), found this video clip of Devin Harris playing 1-on-1 hoops....

  • Pupule's Football Top 10 ballot (Oct 14)
    10/15/08
I can't really argue against another team being No. 1. I just look at this 2008 mashed potatoes version of the Top 10 and it's probably the most convoluted, unpredictable group in many years. Maybe ever. Saint Louis has the ball on my field, though, and they're the most difficult to stop. For now.

  • $66 million and mopeds
    10/15/08
But Ellis was a great fit last year and got a $66 million contract. In the offseason, he decided to ride a moped. Why does a man with a humongous contract ride on the most dangerous two-wheeled vehicle on earth?

  • Leilehua wins, OIA Red West avoids 5-way nightmare
    10/15/08
EIGHT is a good number that will eliminate the possibility of five-way ties for first place. It is also the number of regular-season games the OIA played in the early 1980s. I remember because Kaimuki was 5-3, 4-4 during my last two years.

  • Pupule Pigskin Picks, Week 9 (Oct. 10-11)
    10/12/08
Iolani at Kamehameha. Raiders historically get worn down by their D-I foes in the ILH. However, with no major injuries after last week's upset win over Saint Louis, Iolani is a big obstacle for Kamehameha. Warriors need a win to stay in the ILH D-I race. Iolani basically has ILH D-II wrapped up.

  • Pupule's Fantastic 4 (Oct 8)
    10/12/08
Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008 My Top 4 football teams among schools with 700 students and less....

  • Pupule's Small-School Football Top 10 (Oct 8)
    10/12/08
    Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2008...

  • Maverick thoughts: Cuban on 'how to get rich'
    10/12/08
Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2008 And it probably ain't what you think....

  • Pupule's Football Top 10 ballot (Oct 7)
    10/12/08
As far as I'm concerned, all the teams between 1 and 10 (and probably beyond) can go head to head and we really have no idea who will win. That's the kind of season it is.

  • Common Cents: Goodbye Haagen Daas
    10/07/08
    • Skip the gourmet ice cream ($7 for a pint of Haagen Daas) and get the cheapie Creamsicles and ice cream sandwiches for half the price.

  • Foolish wonders: Rivalry out of control on Maui
    10/06/08
Last night, when Waialua visited Moanalua, I saw both teams -- without any adult prodding -- gather in pre-game for handshakes and even hugs. Every player then kneeled down for a short prayer led by one of their peers.

  • Fantasy temptation: Sproles vs. Slaton
    10/06/08
I am never benching Brett Favre again. Mangini's days of reining in #4 are over. He is truly the magic man.

  • Now what?
    10/06/08
Iolani beat Saint Louis. Holy crap.

  • Pupule Pigskin Picks, Week 8 (Oct. 3-4)
    10/04/08
Konawaena at Hawaii Prep, 2 p.m. -- Would love to see this game on the slopes of the Kohala Mountains. Wildcats are banged up and ripe for the picking, but they always find a way to win. Pupule says: Konawaena 15, HPA 9.

  • Strange times, stranger politics
    10/04/08
If McCain had three daughters, there would be 1) the smart, aloof one, 2) the artistic, quiet one, and 3) the zany, incomprehensible blabbermouth. Guess which one Palin would be?

  • When someone is good to you
    10/03/08
I don't know which is worse, the feeling of pain, of missing her and her care and her simply being a good mother ... or the knowledge that there's really no control of the feeling of powerlessness. The permanence.

  • More Te'o photos
    10/02/08
Hanging out with the Te'o ohana, with Manti and his buddy Robby, felt like ... home.

  • Pupule's Football Top 10 ballot (Sept 30)
    10/01/08
The Buffanblu had two weeks to prepare and the time off helped. More evidence that the trip to Seattle (plus jet lag and the short week that followed) took a lot out of Punahou leading into the Saint Louis game. Cayman Shutter (shoulder) seems to be back on track and that frisky new defense gave Kamehameha some trouble.

  • More Mom dreams
    10/01/08
Then it got more vivid. I reached out to touch her face and I started crying. I said, "Mom, I miss you." Then the dream ended.

  • Pupule Pigskin Picks, Week 7 (Sept. 26-27)
    10/01/08
Buffanblu had a bye week to heal and prepare, but that's no guarantee of a win, of course. Warriors are fairly sharp and pushed Saint Louis to the hilt last week. Tough pick. Warrior ground game is key.

  • Fantasy Logic: Warner or Edwards
    10/01/08
Warner, on the other hand, will throw often if the Cardinals are behind. If they're ahead, he'll still throw a lot. That's their philosophy, and with those great receivers and two quality running backs, it works.
