Steinlager Shaka Longboard Series Event #3

Nalu Hawaiian Spirit Completed At Kewalo Basin in Good Fun Surf

Honolulu, Hawaii—The third event of the Steinlager Shaka Longboard Series was completed in good fun waves at the Kewalo Basin fish house this past weekend as 140 hardcore longboard surfers took over the left break with some style and aggressive maneuvering. Nineteen divisions including the local pro's brought traditional surfing to new heights as the difficult shifty break took on different conditions throughout the competition.

In the Shaka Pro division on Saturday, rising star Ned Snow from Honolulu, Hawaii, won his very first professional event. The strategy of getting waves early on in the 30-minute final had the 19-year-old, who just returned from Biarritz, France for the world championships (in which he finished 38th overall), getting three solid waves with Kai Sallas, Kapono Nahina and Kekoa Uemura playing catch up. Uemura, the runner up to Joel Tudor in the recent championship, had a good run and got close but couldn't back up his high score as the bigger consistent sets disappeared during the second half of the final as Uemura settled for another runner-up placing. Sallas, coming off a win in the China Uemura Classic at Queen's the previous week, ended third and Nahina, who couldn't get his rhythm going finished fourth.

In the Sunday amateur portion of the event, Kapahulu resident Jordan Hart made his third straight first-place finish in the men's final and built his point ratings lead over the 19-24 age category competitors. In the Super Legends, the first ten point ride ever recorded in the Steinlager Shaka Series by a legend, took home bacon for Koapaka "Hurricane Bob" Brown as he waxed the other competitors including legendary Rabbit Kekai. In the overall Iron Man award, Jamie Ballenger from Hawaiianwatershots.com won his second award with the highest point total in three divisions, (Senior Masters, High Makamaka and You Somebody).

A big mahalo goes out to Yuta Yasuhara and the Nalu Hawaiian Spirit crew for doing the bar-B cookout which included the Teri burgers and hot dogs and to Sobe for providing the human fluid consumption and energy drinks.

The next event on the Steinlager Shaka calendar is August 21, 22 for the Ocean Club Cheater Five Classic at the Ala Moana Bowl.
